The one-tweet financial plan

Twitter, Screen, Social, Phone

“Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give.” — William A. Ward

That’s right folks. Step right up. Don’t be shy.

I’m about to simplify your life. Your financial life anyway. A one-tweet financial plan is the way to go.

You see that quote at the start of this blog post.

There, I just gave it to you in the quote stated above. The end.

Just kidding. But seriously, it is in the quote above. I will just expand upon it.

Warning this post is full of tweets! But lots of information. Stay with me! 😉

Keyboard, Hand, Tweet, Twitter, Computer

WHAT IS A ONE-TWEET FINANCIAL PLAN?

A financial plan that is 240 characters or less and can be sent out in a tweet.

I know what you’re thinking. Yeah, right. Well, since seeing is believing I will show you exactly what I mean.

Here is my one-tweet financial plan.

And due to the recent government shutdown, I have also created a one-tweet financial plan government shutdown edition. 😉 It’s kind of like how they created the Scrabble game deluxe. You take an already good thing and then just expand upon it and make it even better.

I also like to think ahead to the future and plan for my taxes. You need to save today because the future gets more expensive. What costs a $1 today will cost $1.25 in the future. Plan ahead.

Speaking of Scrabble…

LISTEN

It is one of the best qualities you can have. Being a good listener can lead to lasting marriages, better employment, and happier relationships.

You see #2 there. @mjp2520. Yes, that’s me. 😉

I started reading about personal finance and attending seminars or conferences long before I started writing and tweeting about it. Coming from a place of experience and information gives you a different point of view (POV). That POV can make you an expert in your field. Never underestimate the power of just listening and observing.

THINK

I want you to write down your goals, thoughts, wants, needs, and desires. Like I said before, seeing is believing. Think before you act.

There is nothing wrong with moving slowly or with caution. However, that does not give you the right to move like a turtle. First, think. Then act and move expeditiously once a decision has been made. Move quick. Make haste. Do not overthink it. This can lead to analysis paralysis.

Moving slowly does allow you to more clearly see the path ahead. But once you see it, I want you to run toward your goal. Not walk. RUN!

EARN

You have to earn money to save it. It is just that simple.

I was in debt up to my eyeballs. However, I did not toss my hands in the air and say who cares as I will be in debt forever. Nope. Not me. I chipped away at my debt. Then, I slowly started to have savings. I emerged from the debt cocoon I was in and became a soon to be debt-free butterfly.

I found ways to get rid of my debt. By any means necessary. It didn’t matter if I had to sell items, save my change, get 0% deals on every item I purchased, or stop buying chewing gum just to save a buck.

Once the debt started going away, I had tons of disposable income. Go figure.

INVEST

I cannot stress this enough. Investing can be the difference between you being one of the haves or have nots. I hate to break it to you, but the top earners invest.

Investing is a long game.

I read the wealthy invest up to 20 percent or more of their income each and every year.

The 1 percent are making a killing in the stock market. And you can too.

When I decided I was going to be rich, I turned my attention toward investing. If you want to know where Greenbacks Magnet is investing, then check out my post below. 😉

See my post How I turned a $450 car payment into $100,000

Here are some of my tweets on some good investment books to read.

The wealthy also read A LOT!!!

According to Grant Cardone, CEO’s read 60 books and attend 6 conferences a year. The average person reads less than one book a year. I read that in the 10X Rule.

Read the 10x rule. Took his advice. Set 10x goals and do 10x more action. It worked. Many thanks! Went from saving $10 to $10k a year. #OBSESSED

WAIT

Yes, like the Maroon 5 song. Wait.

Anything worth having is worth the wait.

You know all those overnight success stories you hear? Well, those are garbage. It takes years of hard work, persistence, determination and sacrifice to get anywhere worth going.

All those bands you hear about or people you see on television. They were honing their craft long before records executives starting signing them to deals.

Gene Simmons said he was going from gig to gig in an old van living off hot dogs with his bandmates in KISS.

Pat Benatar left her job as a bank teller to start working as a singing waitress making $4,000 a month before she hit it big.

You know their names now, but there was a time they were broke and unknown.

Success comes from doing not luck. And the toiling to make that success happen, can take years or even decades. So, prepare yourself.

Don’t be like Beetlejuice. Remember that scene in the movie where he took his number and was impatient. It was hilarious. One of Michael Keaton’s most memorable roles.

The point is that you have to be patient. I do not mean wait forever. I just mean that all good things do take some amount of time.

Don’t be so quick to judge or criticize others, before you know the full story.

“I praise loudly. I blame softly.” – Catherine II, Catherine the Great

FORGIVE

They say it’s divine.

“Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” – Oscar Wilde

And I make sure to forgive. I always forgive, once.

See my post A Christmas Carol: Lessons in Finance, Business, and Life

TRY

Don’t be a quitter. Try first. You will never know if you have got the goods to make it, unless you get out there and do it. Do something. Don’t just wait to be discovered. Get out there and meet people. Shake some hands. Knock down some doors. Make some phone calls. Just try.

SAVE

This one thing can change your life. Saving. It is the start of all things to come. The act alone is a reflection of who you are and what you value.

The foundation for all your future wealth is derived from this word and your ability to do it.

See my post How Millennial Money inspired me to start saving $13,333.06 a year

GIVE

You give as a way to reach back and help those that come after you. It is a way to show your gratitude for all the things those that came before you have done.

There was a time there was no stock market. Or anesthesia. 😮

Let’s take a little walk down Wall Street.

The NYSE celebrated its 200th anniversary in 1992. Wall Street started under a tree in 1792 with commodities.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was founded in 1896 with only 12 industrial stocks. Those 12 companies: American Cotton Oil, American Sugar, American Tobacco, Chicago Gas, Distilling & Cattle Feeding, General Electric, Laclede Gas, National Lead, North American, Tennessee Coal and Iron, U.S. Leather and U.S. Rubber.

My how things have changed. None of those stocks are now part of the DJIA.

The good thing about indexes is that unlike individual stocks, when things go south and a business performs badly or goes under, it is culled. That’s right. They remove it from the DJIA and replace it with another business. Usually one that is performing well. That is the reason you invest in indexes. For the protection against a business going out of business and you losing your shirt!

General Electric (GE) is the only member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average that has been in the index since it’s beginning in 1896. It is being taken out and replaced by Walgreens (WBA) as reported of July 2018. That’s a 122-year run.

They have made it easier for you to invest now than 100 years ago.

Dale Carnegie had to ask his mother to mortgage the house so that he could invest the funds in stocks that he knew. That was how he built his fortune. Remember to invest in what you know.  Earn a fortune and then give it away.

Giving is one of the best ways to be philanthropic.

Remember that part in the movie Troy where Achilles asks his mother if he should go to Troy. And she says to him only if he wants his name to be remembered and live on throughout the ages.

Giving is a way to have immortality.

Case in point, Ms. Oseola McCarty inspired many others to donate to charity as well after she donated her life savings of $150,000 to a college in 1995. How’s that for a swan song? One of the biggest donors she inspired: Media Magnate and Mogul Ted Turner.

So why is it even noteworthy when Oseola McCarty, an elderly woman, donates $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi? In the case of Ms. McCarty, it is the heart behind the gift, and the lifetime of effort that went into it. For her act of kindness, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor and got to ring the stock market opening bell.

How about that for recognition in helping others? And she asked nothing for herself or in return. These things were given to her for her charitable contribution to society.

Giving is passed down from generation to generation.

So, if you want to be immortal and have your memory live on forever, one word: give.

Money breadcrumbs from the show Grimm

Image result for grimm logo

“We shall see the crumbs of bread… and they will show us our way home again.” – Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, 1812

Breadcrumbs are a series of connected pieces of information or evidence. People often refer to money as bread. The Grimm Brothers used breadcrumbs in their fairy-tale Hansel and Gretel for the protagonists to find their way.

Money gems are being dropped everywhere. If you look hard enough. You can only find what you are looking for. So, look no further. Greenbacks Magnet is about to show you where to look. Just follow the money…breadcrumbs that is.

But first, who are the Brothers Grimm?

WHO ARE THE GRIMM BROTHERS?

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

“Some men are born to good luck: all they do or try to do comes right—all that falls to them is so much gain—all their geese are swans—all their cards are trumps—toss them which way you will, they will always, like poor puss, alight upon their legs, and only move on so much the faster. The world may very likely not always think of them as they think of themselves, but what care they for the world? what can it know about the matter?” ― The Brothers Grimm, The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales

The Brothers Grimm Jacob and Wilhelm, were German academics, linguists, and authors who together collected and published folklore during the 19th century. They are best known for the publication of their works titled Grimm’s Fairy Tales in 1812. The book contains 209 tales collected by the Brothers Grimm.

Some of their most famous tales include: Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Valiant Little Tailor, Snow White and Red Rose, Briar-Rose, King Thrushbeard, How Six Men Got On in the World, Rumpelstiltskin, Bearskin, The Dancing Princesses (The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes), The Four Skillful Brothers, and Hansel and Gretel.

My absolute favorite is Bearskin. A close second is the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Both tales had flair and a lot of truth in them. The antagonist in Bearskin reminds me Smeagol from The Lord of the Rings film, but that’s another story.

It has been so long since I have seen these tales, but I have never forgotten them and their theme of morality. I still use these stories as reminders to help others and do the right thing. For your entertainment, I have uploaded the videos from the Grimms’ Fairy Tales Classics from the late 1980’s. The show also ran reruns in the 1990’s.

Bearskin
The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes

The University of Pittsburgh has an online Grimm Brothers’ Home Page where you can read their classic tales. However, be forewarned that their stories did not always have the Happy Endings you are used to hearing in the more modern versions and retelling of the stories. They are, for lack of a better word, grimmer. Very different from another world-famous fairy tales author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). One of his most notable works was The Little Mermaid. It was turned into a Disney film in 1989 and is also my favorite Disney movie.

I digress, let’s get back to the real reason for this post, the television show Grimm.

WHAT IS GRIMM?

Opening: “There once was a man who lived a life so strange, it had to be true. Only he could see what no one else can—the darkness inside, the real monster within, and he’s the one who must stop them. This is his calling. This is his duty. This is the life of a Grimm.

Grimm opening credits with his introduction

Grimm is an American fantasy police procedural drama television series that aired on NBC from October 28, 2011 to March 31, 2017, for 123 episodes, over six seasons.

The story followed the journey of a Portland police homicide detective by the name of Nick Burkhardt (played by David Giuntoli), who is a Grimm. A Grimm keeps the peace and world order between humanity and the supernatural, which are called Wesen.

What made this show so great was not so much just the title character, but all the characters who played his friends around him. This is one of the first and only shows where I have ever seen the supporting cast be just as important as the main character.

The show was also at times very funny. In addition, whenever the Grimm was discovered by Wesen, they would morph into their true selves and this made every episode fun, surprising, and unique.

The supporting cast consisted of the following actors: Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee, Bree Turner, and Claire Coffee. The shows fight scenes were amazing. And the shows themes of the constant testing of morality was ever-present and consistent throughout the show just like that of the Grimm Fairy Tales. Each episode also started off with a quote from one of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales and let you know what that episode would be about.

Series opening credits

Love the intro music. It really gets your heart pumping. And the show is just as it appears.

You can see all quotes listed by season here at this website.

“When words fail music speaks. – Hans Christian Andersen

In the opening scene of the Pilot espisode, The Eurhythmics Song Sweet Dreams is playing. This song ultimately led them to solve a case they were working on. When interrogating him they got nothing. It wasn’t what the perp said, it was what he sang or hummed. Gotta love music.

Hank: What’s that song?

Nick: Sweet Dreams.

Hank: Eurythmics. One of their better. [sings] “Sweet dreams are made of these. Who am I to disagree…?”

GRIMM CAREERS

Opening quote: “I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to roar….” – Of Man and Mouse, Grimm, Season 1, episode 9

As you know career choice is very important, it can mean the difference of having wealth and abundance or starvation and penury. And no wants a Dickensian existence of poverty. So, choose wisely.

Get the education and training you need to succeed. However, I say do so affordably. It behooves you to do so. You could be stuck depending on others for their help and expertise when you’re in a pinch. Such as the likes of Monroe as Nick’s reluctant informant.

Monroe: What did you just get the books tonight?

Nick: You know about the books?

Another episode, like many…

Nick: Monroe, I need your help.

“What am I, your personal Grimmopedia?” – Monroe to Nick

I say do all you can to depend on self. You will always have your own back. Otherwise, you have to depend on others for their help to remain relevant in the workforce.

Monroe: Hello?

Nick: Hey, it’s Nick?

Monroe: How did you get my new cell phone?!

Nick: Are you kidding me? I’m a cop.

Too funny.

And don’t put all your money in the company stock.

It could go bankrupt and you could end up with nothing. Worse yet, people could leave you to clean up their mess or you could be left holding the bag. One word: Enron.

Do not walk, run down to your HR department and make sure they offer investments other than stock options mostly in their firm. Demand to have more options if you don’t. If not, open a Roth IRA and pick funds outside your company. Be aggressive. It’s your money dammit.

I think of myself like Brad Pitt said in the movie Troy, “We are lions.”

Image result for brad pitt troy we are lions

I am a lioness. I go for the gold. If one thing does not work, I get to work finding another way or pick another path.

To be successful, you must adapt. Like the Navy Seals were taught in that movie Heartbreak Ridge; Navy SEALs Learn To Adapt, Improvise and Overcome. Special Forces (United States Army) has a motto: De Oppresso Liber. Which is Latin for “to free from oppression” or “to liberate the oppressed.” The United States Navy Seals mottos are: “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday”, “It Pays to be a Winner.” Seeing a theme here.

Your greatest asset is your mind and your ability to work. Earning is what will help you build wealth. You cannot save money, if you have no money.

You know who else agrees with me? Rambo. Check out the scene for yourself here.

Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo “I always believed that the mind is the best weapon”

Although, a fictional character, Rambo was trained in Guerilla warfare. His objective was to win. However, he still had a moral obligation to help others and he did. In life people make choices, he made his. You will have to decide for yourself what is important to you because when it is, you will find a way.

Below are the careers of the cast of characters on the show and their median salaries according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Payscale, or Glassdoor, which are the following:

Nick Burkhart – Detective ($65,860)

Hank (Nick’s partner played by Russell Hornsby) – Detective (65,860)

Wu (played by Reggie Lee) – Sergeant ($69,685)

Juliette (played by Bitsie Tulloch) – Veterinarian ($106,770)

Monroe (Nick’s right-hand man played by Silas Weir Mitchell) – Woodworker ($30,192)

Sean Renard (Nick and Hank’s police captain played by Sasha Roiz) – Captain ($80,593)

Rosalee (Monroe’s wife played by Bree Turner) – Retail shop store owner ($38,000)

Adalind Schade (played by Claire Coffee) – Lawyer ($114,000)

GRIMM INHERITANCE

Image result for the grimm trailer
The infamous trailer.

“One feather is of no use to me, I must have the whole bird.” ― Jacob Grimm, The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales

According to the book The Millionaire Next Door, 80-86% of millionaires in America are self-made. Most wealth is earned. Meaning less than 20% inherit their wealth. This is down from a high of 50% or more who did so around the early 1900’s.

In the show, his aunt comes to visit to pass down to him his birthright. A trailer full of artifacts, heirlooms, and antiques that are priceless as they are irreplaceable and is full of Grimm and Wesen lore. It comes in handy throughout the series. And don’t forget the key.

This shows that what a family member does in the past can be of significant value to their loved ones in the future. Work hard today to help your future generations tomorrow. Case in point, Nick was always consulting with the books in the trailer as a guide to help him in the show. Without the books, he would have been lost. Had he been left to fend for himself, there could have been dire consequences.

However, in the present day, most people are not receiving large inheritances at all, if any. You are better off figuring out a profession prior to even starting college. You can look for one that pays well such as business, accounting, and engineering or are of interest to you.

WHAT MONEY BREADCRUMBS ARE THERE?

“Hansel took his little sister by the hand, and followed the pebbles which shone like newly-coined silver pieces, and showed them the way.” ― Jacob Grimm, Grimm’s Fairy Tales: Complete Edition & Over 200 Fairy Tales

Take a look around you. Who do you see doing well? Study what they study. Read what they read. Find out what they are doing? But make sure its legit and legal.

PRETTY GRIMM TO HAVE NO INHERITANCE

Related image

Opening quote: “‘No,’ said the King. I’d rather die than place you in such great danger as you must meet with in your journey.” – The Water of Life, Grimm Brothers from the Grimm episode The Inheritance

One episode showed Adalind meeting with a lawyer about her mother’s estate. Not only did her mother had no assets, but she hadn’t paid her taxes in like six years. In addition, her storage unit was only paid up to the end of the month. After, that her stuff would be auctioned off or thrown away. This is all too common nowadays.

Like I said before, most people do not receive inheritances and if they do, it is not likely to be more than a few thousand dollars. You are better off working to build your own fortune. Then it will not matter what other people do with their money.

A GRIMM PRICE TO PAY

Another episode showed that more artifacts were found that belonged to a Grimm in Europe. When Monroe’s uncle offered to sell it to Nick he asked for something like $250,000. Nick didn’t have that kind of money. Especially, on a cop’s salary. That’s a lot of money.

Monroe said that to his uncle. He said that was his price and left.

Not being able to get your hands on a significant amount of cash fairly quickly is a way to miss out on opportunities. You should always have liquid cash in savings or a stash you can tap for emergencies. I started my emergency fund with $25. My rainy day fund now consists of me saving over $14,000 a year. I learned how important having a money stash from the fictional character Scrooge McDuck.

See my post Money Lessons I Learned from Scrooge McDuck

GRIMM MOVE

Opening quote: “It is not light that we need, but fire.” – Season 5, episode 1, The Grimm Identity

Lots of fight sequences happen at Nick’s house. So many that Monroe told Nick he should move.

Related image

I gave Monroe the slow clap. I had been thinking that very thing for like 2 seasons. Too many people knew where he lived.

There are times when jobs dry up. Factories and businesses close. Like they said in the old days: Go West, young man! Or There’s gold in them there hills! That lit a fire under mens a$$es to move with a sense of urgency.

To get a fresh start, you may need to move. Move where the jobs are.

Starting a business? Move where capital is plentiful and free flowing.

The operative word: Move.

In another episode, she helped stop an illegal teen shoplifting ring. She herself was basically living in foster homes and on the streets until she met Nick. One of my favorite scenes was when she stole that pair of boots. It was very slick.

Well, we have come to the end of this post. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did writing it. There was nothing like this show.

I am a huge fan of the show Grimm. I miss it.

I still watch the show on demand. If this post piqued your interest in the show, check it out.

Do you want a million dollars? Ask for it!

Life is a negotiation – Louisa May Alcott

Growing your net worth from $0 to $1 million takes time. First, you have to ask for what you want. It starts at the negotiation table.

The sorted topic of coin. Everybody needs it, but those that really want it ask for it.

Ask for what you want. Anything at all. That includes money.

It may not be easy, but you have to negotiate.

It is the only way to get the best deal for you.

You know your worth, so don’t accept anything less.

Speak up to be heard.

Always be reaching. Never settle.

SPEAK UP

A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That’s why they don’t get what they want. – Madonna

Remember that piano scene in Sex and the City where the piano player kept saying, “one more time for the cheap seats in the back.”

Well, that is real advice.

No one can hear you if you whisper. You have to shout. If you do not speak up on your own behalf, no one will.

Believe me, prince charming or princess darling isn’t coming.

It’s like that part in The Lord of the Rings where Gandalf shouts, “fight for your lives.”

I say that to myself all the time. Do it like your life depends on it. Whatever it is, make it count. Finish strong.

Like that voice in Mortal Kombat used to say, “fight hard.”

Either that or die trying.

BE FEROCIOUS AND FEARLESS

Better to live one year as a tiger, then a hundred as sheep. – Madonna

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been called a rebel.

For standing up for myself. For voicing my opinion. The list goes on and on.

I think back on that scene in Troy. To fight back.

To fight back when people attack me? Dog has that kind of courage.

If you want something, then you better be willing to go to bat for it.

I have asked or negotiated for better pay, grades, food, clothing, a deal on a house, fees, and interest rates.

I’m a lioness. I’m like Miley Cyrus says, “I can’t be tamed.”

I like to go for the gold, but I’m not ashamed to get silver or bronze.

Now when people say no, I only hear yes to my dreams.

WHATEVER DOESN’T KILL YOU

I stand for freedom of expression, doing what you believe in, and going after your dreams. – Madonna

Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

You know the saying…only makes you stronger. Well, it’s true.

I will never forget those hard times being picked on as a kid.

I heard Jillian Michaels say she was bullied and teased relentlessly until she started taking martial arts. She says then the bullying stopped real quick.

I just focused on my studies. And my dreams. Just ignored everyone and everything. I was laser-focused.

I maintained good grades, a well-kept appearance, good manners, strong work ethic and a no nonsense attitude. The teasing stopped real quick.

It truly has paid off. As I have done the following:

  • Completed my education
  • Paid off debt
  • Learned how to invest and build wealth
  • Traveled more
  • Maintain my health
  • Took martial arts
  • Became a writer by starting a blog

I just did what I believed in.  And I believed in myself. I just trusted my instincts. I picked a path and didn’t look back.

Things may not have always worked out the way I wanted, but I was never standing still. The needle of my life was always moving forward.

BE THE ARCHITECT OF YOUR LIFE

Don’t you ever let a soul in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are. – Lady Gaga

What do you want?

Be specific.

I’ll give you an example.

I plan to have enough money to retire in 13 years.

Be more specific. No problem.

By May 5, 2031, I plan to have enough money in savings and investments to retire from full-time work forever.

And that is not a wish, but a goal. This is real.

I am planning for that date. Right now.

Will I retire? I don’t know. However, I still plan to have the option to do so.

Scrooge McDuck said no man is poor who can do what he wants every once in a while.

Madonna said, “Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another.”

Warrant Buffet decided at age 10, after going on a trip to the NYSE, this planted the idea in his young head to organize his life around money.

You are the person in charge of your destiny. Never forget it.

PENNIES OR DOLLARS

The mind is the greatest weapon. – Rambo

Oh, it is. If you have ever seen an episode of MacGyver or been in a tight situation and talked yourself out of it, there’s your proof right there.

I have noticed that math and science are great skills for analytical thinking. Great subjects to study in school or to use to prepare for a career.

In the 2004 film Ray, Jamie Foxx plays Ray Charles and is told the way to get a better deal is to ask for one.

Don’t be afraid to ask for more.

My mother taught me that.

She says all people can do is say yes or no.

In the movie, the man says to Ray you think pennies you get pennies, you think dollars you get dollars.

That was just by changing your mindset.

When I think now, I always think in millions.

For instance, it will take approximately 20-30 years to build a million-dollar investment portfolio depending on how much you save and the interest rate. Investing $10k a year at a 8% interest rate will net you $1,000,000 within 28.55 years.

You just have to decide.

Do you want thousands or millions? You think millions, then you get millions.

If you ask for it and are turned down, then use your mind to find a way to create this reality.

Legally, of course.
