Get Rich Using The Tortoise And Not The Hare Method: An Interview With Get Rich Slowly

There are some stories in life that truly move and inspire you. To be an inspiring storyteller, is a gift.

However, all talent must be continually used and worked on if you are to turn talent into something great.

That is when you become a professional. What is a professional? Someone who is paid to do a job.

God gives talent. Work turns talent into genius. Anna Pavlova, Russian Prima Ballerina (1882-1931)

I’ll share with you over time some stories real and fictional that have inspired me on this blog such as Oprah and Jay Leno.

Just to name a few stories, you know off the top of my head, the following:

  • Hearing about strangers helping strangers.
  • People paying it forward by becoming part of an organization as Denzel Washington and Steve McQueen did with their efforts with the Boys and Girls Club.
  • *Just FYI: The actor Steve McQueen grew up poor. The Boys and Girls Club gave him a clean and safe place to be in his youth. He paid it forward after he become a famous actor by asking movie studios to give him thousands of white t-shirts, socks, and personal hygiene products as part of his compensation package for starring in their films. He secretly turned around and donated all this material to the Boys and Girls Club to give out to the young men there. Just melts your heart doesn’t it.

Steve McQueen also known as “The King of Cool”
  • How the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles always looked out for the little guy.

  • The friendship between Shaggy and Scooby-Doo. Those two they just warm my heart.

Some of my favorite singers that have turned their talent into success are Whitney Houston, Pat Benatar and Toni Braxton.

One of the things I remember Ms. Braxton saying, “music is not about you just saying what you think, but how you make people feel.” Her music and voice have always made me feel good.

Seeing her up on that stage performing recently at the American Music Awards, reminded me of all the reasons I liked her; she has a gift for making you feel good with the words she sings that transcends whatever hard times you are going through in that moment. She makes you feel happy.

And speaking of people that inspire you with their words, I would like to introduce you today to someone who has not only done that for me, but for millions of people around the world through his writing on personal finance. The one and only Mr. JD Roth.

He has turned his passion and talent into success as a successful writer and blogger. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person.

He was kind enough to agree to this interview on Greenbacks Magnet (GBM).

Here at GBM we are all about rejecting buying brand new fresh off the factory floor made cars in order to become Financially Independent (FI).

We pull back the curtains and blow the top off the math, and not the Mercedes, behind how not buying new cars can make you rich.

GBM is the place where we like to get down and dirty into the math behind building wealth, but we keep the jokes clean. Our jokes here are like a Hallmark card, GBM cares enough to send the very best! Even my tweets are called Lipstick Confessions!!! haha ๐Ÿ’‹Smooches

Fun Fact: The original pilot of Space Ghost C2C was produced in a closet, and the guest was Denzel Washington (second mention in this post cause Denzel is just everywhere). It was green-lit as a series on the Cartoon Network in 1994 and went on to huge success.

Therefore, if you are looking to start a podcast, let this be inspiration to know it is okay to start it on a shoestring budget and in your closet.

Let’s get down to the interview.

Topic du jour: The tortoise wins the get rich race every time. Who is the man behind the tortoise shell?

Subject: Men who talk money. How to Get Rich Slow?

GRS JD Roth: YES, I would be happy to do your interview.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please put your hands together for Mister JD Roth!!! The founder of Get Rich Slowly.

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF

GBM Miriam: It was great meeting JD Roth of Get Rich Slowly at FinCon 18 in Orlando.ย  I had seen his picture on the blog-sphere so many times that I knew who he was on sight. I tried to keep a calm and cool composure, but on the inside I was screaming, “IT’S JD ROTH!!!!!” Over and over in my head.

Imagine my surprise when I got to ride shotgun with him on our way to a restaurant for a fellow bloggers birthday.

Here I am a total stranger and he was as cool as a cucumber. Totally down-to-earth and fun too. Check out one of his tweets. Hilarious!!!

You can check out more of this story on my post about my very first FinCon called FinCon The Recap from your Friendly Neighborhood Greenbacks Magnet Part I and Part II.

We are in the car with Liz of Chief Mom Officer, Military Dollar, and Erin of Reaching for FI. In a car full of women, he was totally cool driving while listening to Taylor Swift. Yes, I found out that JD is a T. Swift fan. I am too. It’s like john jacob jingleheimer schmidt up in here!!!

JD STARTS A BLOG ABOUT GETTING RICH

1. What prompted you to start a blog about money? How much makes you feel rich? Would you say $500k, $1M, $2M, or more?ย

I started Get Rich Slowly for three reasons. First, I wanted to document my own journey out of debt. Second, I thought maybe I could help other people learn to manage money as I improved my own financial skills. Finally, I hoped maybe I could make a few hundred bucks per month to supplement my income.

I had NO idea that starting Get Rich Slowly would change the trajectory of my life, financial and otherwise. It wasn’t even something I could have conceived at the time. Yet it changed everything.

How much makes me feel rich? That’s a great question. It doesn’t take much. I grew up poor. My family lived in a run-down trailer house in rural Oregon. My father was often out of work. Sometimes we had to take assistance from our church in order to get by. Today, I have far more money than my parents ever did. I feel very rich. But I don’t know what dollar amount leads to that…

GBM Miriam: Well ok. Thank you for your honesty. It is always appreciated. I fell into learning about money by accident. I was at my boyfriend’s place when I saw a Kiplinger magazine lying around. I just so happened to pick it up…

2. Any favorite finance books? How come?

I’ve read and enjoyed many finance books, but my favorite books about money usually aren’t actually books about money. What I mean is that often the books that I believe will most help people with their finances aren’t financial books. They’re only tangentially related to finances.

For instance, I think The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People is probably one of the most helpful book anyone can read if they’re struggling to improve their finances. The ideas and philosophy it conveys are so valuable in developing a successful financial mindset.

GBM Miriam: One of my top favorites is The Millionaire Next Door. That and the one you named are some good reading. ๐Ÿ‘

Image result for reading gif

3. What are you reading right now? What’s on your night stand?

Image result for reading gif

Haha. I always have several books going at once. Right now, I’m reading:

* Wake Up and Live! by Dorothea Brande

* House of Suns by Alistair Reynolds

* Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan

* Deep Work by Cal Newport

This “many books at once” habit kind of goes against the whole Deep Work philosophy…ย

4. One thing people may not know about you?

When I left for college in 1987, I thought I was going to be a religion major. My aim was to get a religion degree, then become a Christian missionary. I thought I’d ultimately end up as a church pastor.

Image result for interesting gif

GBM Miriam: I did see you mention something about that on your blog. I put a link to that story in your response for readers to be transported there faster than Marty hitting 88 mph by clicking on college in 1987.

5. What’s in your wallet? How did you start building wealth?

These two questions don’t seem related.

I carry a minimalist wallet:ย https://www.tombihn.com/products/minimalist-wallets?variant=13762302378047

It contains my debit card, my business credit card, my personal credit card, my Apple card, maybe $40 cash, and my insurance info (health and vehicle). That’s it.

I started building wealth through a two-pronged attack. First, I reduced how much I was spending. Second, I worked to build my income. Basically, I did my best to work both sides of the wealth equation (income and spending) in an attempt to grow my saving rate as high as possible.

Image result for saving money gif

GBM Miriam: Awesome. I started by saving $1 a day. Then gradually started increasing my savings and investing rates from 5% to over 40% of my income over like 10 years. I cut out buying crap and clothes to bank that money for my future baby!!

Image result for saving money gif

Well said. So that’s what I did. Unlike that episode of King Meets Queens, when Carrie buys thousands of dollars worth of expensive clothes, keeps the tags on them to return them for a refund (get this because she could afford them *ahem* $2,000 Chanel suits) and said this to her husband…

Image result for saving money gif

If this sounds like you, please stop reading THIS and go read the Get Rich Slowly archives right now! If you want to get rich, cut the excuses and get fiscally educated!!!

If you are truly fiscally clumsy, then try the lazy method of investing. I would use Swensen’s model that he crafted for Yale University. With over $27 billion dollars under management, the Yale endowment is the second largest college endowment in the world (Harvard is #1). Just watch the video. Now you and Rory Gilmore will have something in common.

And if this is too much, just park your investments into a total stock market fund like the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX) or Vanguard Total Stock Market ETFย (VTI).

7. If you found a lottery ticket that ends up winning $1.5 million. What would you do?

I would buy new cars for me and my girlfriend. I’d get her a Tesla Model 3. I’d buy myself a Mini Cooper — the electric model, if it ever gets released. I’d stick the rest of the money in the bank.

GBM Miriam: A mini Cooper eh? I can dig it.

14. What was your best MacGyver moment?

This question is so NOT me. I’m not a MacGyver type. That said, my best MacGyver moment was probably installing a new tape deck in the 1993 Toyota pickup I bought last January. Admittedly, I had instructions for this project, but it was still pretty MacGyver-y for me. Now I can listen to cassette tapes as my dog and I cruise around Portland. ๐Ÿ˜‰

15. If I gave you $40,000 to start a business, what would you start?

I know the answer to this! I’d start a blog. In fact, I’ve spent a similar amount to launch blogs in the past — and they’ve become businesses.

GBM Miriam: Why am I not surprised. ๐Ÿ˜† I love blogging too.

16. If you had $2,000, how would you double it in 24 hours?

Hm. I’m not sure. There’s no reliable way to do this, of course. My inclination would be to pick a game of pure chance, such as roulette, then to make a single bet that would either double the money or lose it in one go. Using that roulette example, if I bet all $2000 on, say, even numbers or odd numbers, I’d have about a 48% chance of doubling my money and a 52% chance of losing it all.

Really, though, there’s no sure way to do this.

GBM Miriam: That’s JD. He always gives it t you straight and keeps it ๐Ÿ’ฏjust how we like it.

For example, he just put this out there for our fiscal viewing. Check out his post on Our first annual family meeting. Bringing people and finances together. As a financial blogger, that just melts my heart โคright there.

Money and Life advice I got from Paper Towns

โ€œYou don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world…but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices.โ€ โ€“ John Green, author The Fault in Our Stars

The summer of 2015 my nieces really wanted me to take them to go see this movie. Not knowing what it was about, I decided to go ahead and take them because of their sheer enthusiasm alone. I was not disappointed. The movie was incredible.

Image result for paper towns

It is a coming of age teenage romance written by the Fault in Our Stars author John Green.

The movie was based on a Young Adult (YA) he novel he wrote entitled Paper Towns.

Image result for paper towns

It follows along with two young teens Margo Roth Spiegelman (played by Cara Delevingne) and Quentin Jacobsen or Q for short (played by Nat Wolff).

It was turned into a motion picture by Twentieth Century Fox and released in theaters on July 9, 2015.

The film is a series of adventures and near misses while we tag along with Quentin to find his dream girl, who goes missing just a couple weeks before high school graduation. Although, the film is fun, itโ€™s the dialogue that really captures your attention and wins your heart.

If you get a chance, you can get lost, get found with Paper Towns.

WHAT IS A PAPER TOWN?

A paper town is a fake town that is created by map makers, as a way to protect their copyright, to know if theyโ€™ve been robbed.

In the film, it is referenced as a shallow town or place. Everything is so fake. A place that is fragile.

ALL STORIES HAVE A BEGINNING AND SOME ARE SWEET

โ€œShe had the kind of fingers you want to interlace with your own.โ€ โ€“ Quentin

The story is based around the feelings Quentin has for his childhood sweetheart and crush, Margo Roth Spiegelman.

At a young age, it was shown that Margo was a precocious child. This intrigued Quentin. However, as they got older she became more outgoing and him more introverted.

Throughout my life, I have had to throw caution to the wind and go for what I want. If you want anything in this world, at times, you will have to do the same. You have to go all in and strike first.

For example, when I was looking a job many years ago, I decided to approach it as a numbers game. I said screw it. Iโ€™m just going to apply for as many jobs as I can and see what happens.

I must have put out 100 resumes. Out of all of those job applications, I got one yes. But that was all I needed. You only need one yes to change your whole life. It just starts with putting yourself out there. Nothing comes from obscurity and being shy. Sometimes, you have to be willing to shout.

PRETTY HURTS

โ€œThat’s always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfast cereals based on color instead of taste.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

What you look like on the outside is all vanity. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Do not let society dictate what you should be. Be you. And remember this: beauty fades.

โ€œI’m starting to realize that people lack good mirrors. It’s so hard for anyone to show us how we look, & so hard for us to show anyone how we feel.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

You have to rely on more than just your looks in this life.  Eventually, you will have to take care of yourself. You better be up for the task or you will have problems.

I have seen tons of beautiful women have bad credit, horrible relationships, and be broke. But hey, at least they were pretty right?

It is not enough to be pretty. You have to be more than just fine. No one wants to marry a beautiful airhead or a beautiful fool.

This blog is all about financial independence.

Have you ever heard the saying a fool and his money is soon parted?

I rest my case.

MAKE THE FIRST MOVE

โ€œI didnโ€™t need you, you idiot. I picked you. And then you picked me back.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

Those who make the first move are usually victorious.

In the film, Quentin wants so badly to be with Margo. However, he always holds back. In this life, you canโ€™t hold anything back.

Case in point, in this blog, I donโ€™t hold anything back. I give you everything I have. I know thatโ€™s what I want when I deal with people. So, I make sure to do the same to others. Whatever it is you want in this life, this is my advice to you: make your move.

YOUR LIFE CAN CHANGE IN ONE DAYโ€ฆOR A NIGHT

โ€œTonight, darling, we are going to right a lot of wrongs. And we are going to wrong some rights. The first shall be last; the last shall be first; the meek shall do some earth-inheriting. But before we can radically reshape the world, we need to shop.โ€ – Margo Roth Spiegelman

I have read countless biographies of the rich and famous where they retell how a single incident changed the course of their entire lives.

Well, in this film, it is the night Margo climbed through Qโ€™s window.

She asks him to borrow his momโ€™s car so she can go on a midnight caper of revenge or he could come along too and be the get a way driver.

Decisions, decisions.

PICK A PATH

โ€œThe way I figure it, everyone gets a miracle. Like, I will probably never be struck by lightning, or win a Nobel Prize, or become the dictator of a small nation in the Pacific Islands, or contract terminal ear cancer, or spontaneously combust. But if you consider all the unlikely things together, at least one of them will probably happen to each of us. I could have seen it rain frogs. I could have stepped foot on Mars. I could have been eaten by a whale. I could have married the Queen of England or survived months at sea. But my miracle was different. My miracle was this: out of all the houses in all the subdivisions in all of Florida, I ended up living next door to Margo Roth Spiegelman.โ€ โ€• Quentin Jacobsen, Paper Towns

You can pretty much guess what answer he gave Margo.

He went with her.

Let the fun begin.

REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD AND AT NIGHT

โ€œI always felt like you had to be important to have enemies.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

When she asks for his momโ€™s car, she tells him that she has like 11 items on her to-do list tonight and that most of them will probably require a getaway car. ย

I remember that quote from Winston Churchill, โ€œYou have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.โ€ Margo reminds me of that. She found out her friends had wronged her. So, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

โ€œWe bring the rain down on our enemies, not the scattered showersโ€ – Margo Roth Spiegelman

That is a line that she says of their hit-and-run capers, on that fun-filled night, as she leaves a Zorro-like โ€˜Mโ€™ that is left at the scene of all her crimes.

Margo replies this when Q asks her if her scheme of getting revenge is necessary and if they can do something that is not so risky and harsh.

I have to agree. Sometimes you have to teach people a lesson. You have to tell people how you want to be treated. Stand up for yourself. You may not need a night of midnight capers to do it, but you can still send a message that youโ€™re not a pushover.

โ€œIf you don’t imagine, nothing ever happens at all.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

Margo has some pretty extreme things she does that night.

First, they shop for supplies.

Second, they visit each one of her enemies.

Lastly, they celebrate their success at escaping getting caught.

I too like to celebrate my wins.

When I was able to start slowly paying off debt one by one, I celebrated each time. It keeps the momentum going. And just makes you feel good. Hard work = success and rewards.

  • Paid off my car. Then I treated myself to a spa day.
  • Then used that money to invest.
  • Once I hit my $100k mark, I turned my attention to hitting a target of 3 times more of $300k.
  • After I pay off each debt, I either save or invest that money.
  • I started saving $25 a week and slowly went to saving $100 a week and so on.

No matter how big or small. Winning just feels good so you want to celebrate.

BE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT

Quentin had the time of his life that night. It was a fun ride to say the least. And he enjoyed every moment.

Some dialogue from the film.

โ€œWhat about the rest of your life?”

She shrugged. “What about it?”

“Aren’t you worried about, like, forever?”

“Forever is composed of nows,” she says.โ€

During that incredible night with Margo, Quentin is laughing and smiling. He was having so much fun.

โ€œMy heart is really pounding,” I said.

“That’s how you know you’re having fun,” Margo said.โ€

While they were running away from one of their capers, Margo says, โ€œI mean, we’re ninjas.”

Related image

Of his time with Margo, Quentin thinks to himself, โ€œAt least I carpe’d that one diem.โ€

As she left notes, at all of her crime scenes, Quentin notices her handwriting and remarks on it.

โ€œInteresting capitalization,’ I said.

‘Yeah. I’m a big believer in random capitalization. The rules of capitalization are so unfair to words in the middle.โ€

Absolutely. Live in the present. Enjoy the moment. Have some fun. Plan for the future, but donโ€™t forget to live for today. Plan a visit with friends, or to a park or movie or museum. Or relax and take a break.

Seize the day!

There will always be something that requires your attention. I say if you have to work, find a way to have some fun too. If youโ€™re not having fun, then whatโ€™s the point?

SURVIVE AND THRIVE

โ€œI’m not saying that everything is survivable. Just that everything except the last thing is.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

No matter what life throws at you, handle it like an adult. You canโ€™t always throw a temper tantrum every time you canโ€™t get your way. You cannot use your fists and throw punches at people. Use your words. Thatโ€™s what adults do.

It is not enough to merely survive. You do want to survive, yes. But you also want to thrive. Success comes to those who work for it. It is your duty to go out and get it. Your familyโ€™s survival depends on it.

If you ever saw the movie Troy, you heard the line, โ€œguard this sword with your life. As long as a Trojan wields it, our people have a future.โ€ Same rule applies for your family. You must survive and prosper today, so that your family has a future.

See my post Financial Independence in 10 years

LEARN HISTORY AS IT TEACHES US LESSONS

โ€œDid you know that for pretty much the entire history of the human species, the average life span was less than thirty years? You could count on ten years or so of real adulthood, right? There was no planning for retirement. There was no planning for a career. There was no planning. No time for planning. No time for a future. But then the life spans started getting longer, and people started having more and more future. And now life has become the future. Every moment of your life is lived for the future–you go to high school so you can go to college so you can get a good job so you can get a nice house so you can afford to send your kids to college so they can get a good job so they can get a nice house so they can afford to send their kids to college.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

They say history often repeats.

Did you know that in the gilded age, robber barons held about 80% of all the wealth in this country about a century ago? And that many folks had no plan for retirement at all. No pensions, no 401(k), nothing.

Thatโ€™s right. Before FDR created Social Security in the 1930โ€™s, there was no pension for the elderly and many were living in poverty. Many people did not live past the age of 65. They did not have to plan so far ahead because many did not live long enough to see any type of future.

That has changed. Today people are living longer. You are your first, best, last, and only line of defense against living in poverty.

Bill Gates said, โ€œIf you are born poor, it’s not your mistake. But if you die poor, it’s your mistake.โ€

Basically, he means you should do everything you can to build a better life for yourself. That means if you canโ€™t go outside and play all day, you have to deal with it.

Canโ€™t see that concert this week. Oh well.

You can only play one sport or instrument. Well, thatโ€™s it then.

You have to stay up and study all night for that big exam. Thatโ€™s life.

Buy a new car or invest that money? Your call, but I suggest you buy a Honda or Ford and invest your dough.

See what I mean. Sacrifice. It yields great rewards.

HIGH SCHOOL IS NOT A DEMOCRACY

โ€œHigh school is neither a democracy nor a dictatorship – nor, contrary to popular belief, an anarchic state. High school is a divine-right monarchy. And when the queen goes on vacation, things change.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

This is a nice take on the whole high school experience.

I felt high school was so silly. I could care less about who wears what or say this or that. I have never been a gossip. I kept my eye on the prize: high school diploma. Everything else is just stuff you do in-between until you reach the end of that goal. Most of the stuff that goes on wonโ€™t even matter after you graduate.

โ€œI know it’s impossible for you to see your peers this way, but when you’re older, you start to see them–the bad kids and the good kids and all kids–as people. They’re just people, who deserve to be cared for.โ€

Amen.

โ€œAs much as life can suck, it always beats the alternative.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns

You have to make lemonade out of lemons. There is always another rainbow and tomorrow does always come and it can get better. The alternative to getting old is dying young.

I will never forget this one time I was talking to an older gentleman and he said he felt old because he was retired. It went down like this.

Him: I feel old. Now, that I’m retired.

Me: Retirement means income.

Him: I like you. (He smiled and perked up.)

A few words of kindness can elevate someone mood, lift their spirits, make their day, and change a situation completely. So, be kind.

โ€œBe curious, not judgmental.โ€ โ€“ Walt Whitman

โ€œYou know your problem, Quentin? You keep expecting people not to be themselves. I mean, I could hate you for being massively unpunctual and for never being interested in anything other than Margo Roth Spiegelman, and for, like, never asking me about how it’s going with my girlfriend – but I don’t give a shit, man, because you’re you. My parents have a shit ton of black Santas, but that’s okay. They’re them. I’m too obsessed with a reference website to answer my phone sometimes when my friends call, or my girlfriend. That’s okay, too. That’s me. You like me anyway. And I like you. You’re funny, and you’re smart, and you may show up late, but you always show up eventually.โ€ โ€• John Green, Paper Towns
