Lipstick Confessions: Confessions Of A Teenage Waitress

Lips, Taboo, Secret, Silence, Mouth

You read that right.

Like Usher, these are my confessions.

Lipstick Confessions that is. 💋

Not Confessions of a Teenage DRAMA QUEEN. Even though I was a teenager, but of a TEENAGE WAITRESS!

Being a waitress was a humbling experience.

After reading about Financial Samurai working for $3.50 an hour at McDonald’s, I was inspired to share my story of making $2.39 an hour + tips while waiting tables at Shoney’s.

It was early experiences like that that shaped my attitudes toward money and work today.

It is also a reason why I try to tip well.

I believe in being a good tipper because that is how people make their living. My father always says tip well enough for people to feel it. I concur.

A waitress is a pretty grueling job.

You are on your feet for hours on end. You must constantly be moving and taking orders or picking up food. Then there’s the nonstop cleaning, folding of napkins, packaging silverware, putting ketchup, salt and pepper and other condiments out and etc.

That early job experience was enough to make me want to work and study so hard while I was young, so that I would not have to when I was older.

This job and other hardships are what drove me to dig my way out of debt and start saving over 40% of my after-tax income.

I have always been thrifty and a saver.

It is because of that, I knew I could not marry someone that is fiscally irresponsible and stay married to them. It just wouldn’t work.

See my post on Why I and Halle Berry Save Soo Much

I have never had the urge to go rent a Mercedes-Benz, drive down to Vegas, buy lottery tickets at every 7-eleven along the way, buy a $4,000 Cartier wrist watch just cause you know bosses gotta be on time, visit a psychic who says my lucky numbers are 4,5, and 6, and then bet it all on black.

Nope. I have not given any of that any thought at all.

Except maybe that the color of the S-Class Mercedes with a 3-layer fabric top is impeccably crafted for coupelike comfort, sleekness and outward views when it’s up, or vanishes in under 20 seconds, even as you accelerate to 30 mph should be silver.

Other than that, no thoughts whatsoever!

Finance Lessons From Flipping Vegas

Mega Millions Win Or Bust

At age 17, I was a teenage waitress.

It would be six years before I began my career working in finance, banking, and loans.

And a full decade after that waitressing job, before I got hired to work at a top-tier private university with excellent benefits.

But first I had to pay my dues.

SLINGING HASH TO MAKE A BUCK

I looked down at my bank receipt.

I had about $10 bucks in my bank account. I was BROKE!

I needed a job.

Being only 17 didn’t provide me with too many options, but as they say, “beggars can’t be choosers.”

I heard the local Shoney’s was hiring wait staff. To my surprise, I applied and got the job.

We went in for training at around 9 am the next week after being hired.

My uniform was black pants, white button shirt, sneakers, a small bow-tie and a black apron.

I only worked there for one summer.

That was long enough to realize I did not want to make my career in the food service.

I knew this was going to be the first, last, and only job I ever took that dealt with serving or making food.

See my post Fast Food Nation

After reading the book Nickel and Dimed, I felt that the author expressed my views on how she and I observed the treatment of low-wage workers was pretty spot on!

The job: take orders, greet customers, keep the restaurant clean, and serve food.

Sounds simple right. Wrong.

We had a busy body manager. Chaotic shifts. And lulls in customers.

Shoney’s was an eat-in restaurant (mostly was a buffet place) that started in Tennessee, but had restaurants in the Mid-Atlantic region.

So many people opted for the breakfast mostly leaving afternoons and dinner times pretty sparse inside.

That means little to no tips!

Not something I was told upon being hired.

Some of the food on the menu looked better than it actually was in-person, but all the food was at least good.

And no matter how hard I worked, it never felt good enough to our nitpicking manager who was always so concerned about how she looked in the eyes of the suits at corporate.

She was too busy kissing their a$$ to worry about us lower employees on the totem poll.

Little good it did her.

She was a ball of constant worry and stress, a chain smoker, and overweight. This was our manager. Our fearless leader?

Is this what management is supposed to look like in America or was this just her issue?

There has to be better ways for her to almost be eligible for food stamps and make a buck, but what do I know.

My lunch break was the only thing I looked forward to because it was the one-time no one could give you any orders and you could get off your feet and rest.

I usually ate a Philly cheesesteak because it was just so good. Calories be damned!

Even some of the cooks seemed disgruntled. They liked to flirt with waitresses and I think one was dating one of them! Whatever.

I just needed the cooks to be happy so that I could get food out piping hot and fast so I could make this money.

I need those tips!

After calculating the $2.39 an hour, working 40 hours a week would only get me $95.60! And that’s gross not net!

Anyway, I now had to deal with the situation.

The goal was to have spending money to hang out with my friends and buy all the cool stuff I always wanted but could never afford.

To be so young and naïve. If I would have been thinking, I should have started tucking money into a Roth IRA. I would probably have had less anxiety when I got my first REAL job!

If I would have saved just $2,000 a year from ages 16-26, without adding another penny, in 40 years that money could have turned into $1,586,894.95 at a 10% return with compound interest! That would have required me to only stash away $22,000!

Just some food for thought right there. Start investing young!

WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF TIPPING

Like the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” I was welcomed to how cheap people really are.

Tipping is the holy grail of waitressing and bartending.

See my post on Money Tips From Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Make that money honey.

I had a wide range of tips, as anyone who works for tips can tell you.

My range was this: $0 to $27.

The highlight of my night was always counting up my tips when I got home. I think the highest I ever got was $100 bucks in one day!

I know that may not sound like a lot, but to a high school kid in the 90’s that was good money.

Things were also cheaper back then as well.

You bought the item, like a pair of shoes or video game, and then the transaction was over.

Not like subscription mania that has now swept across the nation.

See my post America is the land of subscriptions

One of the smallest tips I ever got was from 2 girls I went to high school with. We were not friends but I didn’t expect to only get a $1.17 tip! That was basically the change from the meal they just ate and paid for. Maybe they should have put in an application to work here too!

I remember one time in college when I got a ride home from a weekend class I was taking (I was doing 6 classes that semester), telling me she worked at her brother’s restaurant and she made sure to be on point in order to get that $20 tip!

My days at Shoney’s was long gone by then, but I remember thinking it is far better to work at a higher end restaurant like her because you can make more money.

Lesson Learned: Focus working or catering to high-end clientele that can afford to pay for your services.

SAVE LIKE YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER

Have you ever heard the saying “Live like tomorrow is your last day on earth?”

Well, I like to save like I am going to live forever.

I learned this lesson, like James Brown said, you have to Pay the Cost to be the Boss.

That song and The Payback made me want to get my act together.

I put a plan into action. I was going to save money out of every paycheck.

It took years to make happen, but I went from saving nothing to putting aside 9% of my income. Then from saving $1 a day to $13,000 a year!

The plan had been to stop living paycheck-to-paycheck.

That was okay, but I needed a goal. Something to aim at.

So I picked a number. $13,333 was that number.

I chose it for a few reasons: 1) The number 3 is my favorite number; 2) I saw that another blogger was saving that amount per month so I aimed to duplicate that, but started smaller; and 3) I did the math and discovered I could have over $100,000 cash if I did this for about 7.5 years.

I also knew it was possible that if I invested $100k in the stock market that after 30 years without adding another dime, I could have $1 million shored up for retirement.

Considering that about 20% of Americans have $0 saved for retirement, I knew that I better prepare because tomorrow does come.

The future is going to happen.

If I was going to bet on anything, I would bet on that. Forget Vegas. You can bet the farm the future is coming. And it’s coming fast!

Remember that 9% I mentioned earlier. Well that small sum turned into a small nest egg of $25,000!

And most of that sum is invested in just a few stocks!

The power of compound interest baby!

Money And Greek Myths: Lessons From Clash Of The Titans

Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. – W. C. Fields

That quote from W.C. Fields could not more accurately describe this film. The Gods of Olympus rule the world of man. And those who disobey or hurt others are punished.

I have learned that my attitude dictates everything around me including my ability to build wealth. A positive attitude can move mountains.

See my post Money and Life Lessons I Learned from CBS Srorybreak’s Yeh-Shen

This mythical tale of Perseus, son of Zeus, and his quest for the ‘fair’ Andromeda,  Clash of the Titans was released on June 12, 1981.

Why is Greek mythology important?

Greek mythology is the body of myths originally told by the ancient Greeks. These stories concern the origin and the nature of the world, the lives and activities of deities, heroes, and mythological creatures, and the origins and significance of the ancient Greeks‘ own cult and ritual practices.

Review for the film with an excellent synopsis from IMBD # 8 from 2004.

In the Mount Olympus, Zeus (Laurence Olivier) destroyed the city Argus with the Titan Kraken to punish King Acrisius (Donald Houston) that sentenced his daughter Danae (Vida Taylor) and her son with Zeus Perseus to death in the sea. Zeus orders Poseidon to save them and Perseus grows up in a paradisiacal island with his mother.

Years later, Zeus punishes Calibos (Neil McCarthy), the evil son of the goddess Thetis (Maggie Smith) and fiancé of Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker), turning him into a monster doomed to live in the swamps.

The vindictive Thetis curses Andromeda with a spell and every suitor should solve a riddle; otherwise he would be sentenced to the bonfire. Further, she brings Perseus (Harry Hamlin) while sleeping half-naked to the City of Jopa but Zeus gives magical helmet, shield and sword to his son for self-protection.

When Perseus sees Andromeda, he falls in love with her and uses the magic outfits and Pegasus to discover the answer of the riddle with Calibos.

But Thetis dooms Andromeda to be sacrificed to the Kraken otherwise the City of Jopa and the inhabitants will be destroyed by the Titan. Perseus now has to defeat Medusa and the Kraken to save his beloved princess.

The saga of Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, and the intrigue among the Gods of Olympus, is brilliant presented in this magnificent film. The delightful story is supported by an outstanding international cast, with names such as Laurence Olivier, Burgess Meredith, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress, and by fantastic special effects, considering this is a 1981 movie. The golden mechanical owl Buba is hilarious and responsible for some of the best moments in this film. This epic is a wonderful and highly recommended entertainment for the whole family. I do not recall how many times I have had the pleasure of watching this film.

WEALTH IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HUMILITY

Zeus watches over everyone in Mount Olympus. Especially, that of his children and those of the other Gods, many of whom have children with mortals.

It has become known that Thetis’ son Calibos, who has been spoiled and given every advantage in life, is cold and callous. He abuses and hurts others. For this, Zeus punishes him. His son Perseus, who was given none of those advantages or indulgences of Calibos, is punished by Thetis in retaliation and dropped in the middle of their war between each other.

I found it very interesting that Zeus was willing to punish Calibos for being inhumane and uncivilized. He let the punishment fit the crime.

This is a reminder that life is not fair and no deed goes unnoticed, good or bad.

You should live your life like it will hit the front page of every newspaper. Best to eat humble pie than be served a dish that is best served cold.

WITH MONEY COMES POWER AND WEALTH BRINGS PROTECTION

Being in power means you can make things happen. If you read the stories of Napoleon Bonaparte, The War of the Roses, Winston Churchill, or any leader or influencer you will find a theme.

Success leaves clues.

Regardless, of whether or not you are born into wealth, it is your job to manage all that you have. This is done by controlling your thoughts and actions.

Did you know that most generational wealth is gone within three generations?

According to MarketWatch, about seven in 10 wealthy families lose their fortune by the second generation, according to a study of more than 3,200 high-net worth families by the Williams Group wealth consultancy. By the third generation that number has jumped to 90%.

That means the parents and grandparents make the money, and the children and grandchildren spend it.

After doing some more research, I discovered the following:

  • If you earn more than $34,000 per year, you are in the top 1 percent globally.
  • Most wealth is not inherited. You have to work for your meal. There is no FREE LUNCH.
  • According to the book The Millionaire Next Door, most millionaires are worth between $1 million to $5 million.

See my post the Top 1% of income worldwide

In the film, Zeus provides Perseus with incredible weapons that are magical to protect him. This would not have been possible if his father did not have access to those things.

The reason you want to have financial independence is because you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

FIND YOUR PASSION AND CREATE YOUR FINANCIAL DESTINY

Perseus gets sent to Jopa where Calibos ex-fiance is cursed by his mother Thetis. He decides to find out the answer to the riddle so that he may marry the princess Andromeda.

One of my favorite parts of the film right here. Perseus was smart in the way he found the answer. This is what you are supposed to do in life. Find a goal. Make a plan. Execute. Same rules apply to personal finance.

I set a goal of saving first 10% of my income. Then it kept growing from there. I set the following savings goals:

  • Save 15% of my income
  • Save 20% of my income
  • Save 25% of my income
  • Save 30% of my income
  • Save 35% of my income
  • Save 40% of my income
  • Save 45% of my income
  • Save 50% of my income ➡this is my next goal 💰😉

WE ONLY WANT JUSTICE

If you cannot be a good winner, there is no way you can be a good loser. – Halle Berry

See my post on Halle Berry and success

After Perseus defeats Calibos, he spares his life only if he lifts the cure on Andromeda and he agrees.

He then goes to demand his mother seek out vengeance on Perseus. This is wrong. Perseus won in a fair fight with hand-to-hand combat. However, his mother does what he asks. Thereby putting Perseus on another quest to yet again save Andromeda and risking his life in the process although he committed no crime. He must now face Medusa.

the Gorgon Medusa

NEEDS VS WANTS

Knowing what your needs versus wants are is how you will achieve your goals.

Perseus must face Medusa in order to save Andromeda.

Who is Medusa?

In Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, a Gorgon, generally described as a winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Those who gazed upon her face would turn to stone.

What is the legend of Medusa? In later myths (mainly in Ovid) Medusa was the only Gorgon to possess snake locks, because they were a punishment from Athena. In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid (Metamorphoses 4.770), Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, “the jealous aspiration of many suitors.” Accordingly, Ovid relates that the once beautiful mortal was punished by Athena with a hideous appearance and loathsome snakes for hair for having been in Athena’s temple and being pursued by Poseidon.

Simply put, she was punished for being too beautiful.

In the film, Perseus only did what is absolutely necessary. Veering off course, even just a little could spell disaster. Same goes for wealth building.

TRIUMPHANT AND SUCCESS AT LAST

Perseus wins.

Zeus declares:

No more trials against Perseus for he has confronted them and he has won.

The gods predict that Perseus and Andromeda will live happily, rule wisely, and produce children, and Zeus forbids the other gods to pursue vengeance against them. Zeus commands, “I forbid any revenge against Perseus.” He has triumphed and he shall be rewarded.

The constellations of Perseus, Andromeda, Pegasus, and Cassiopeia are created in their honor.

I feel that like Perseus, I have been underestimated.

It took many years to achieve the goals I had set for myself. Some of which I am still working towards. And as one is crossed off the list, others are added. However, as I once told my sister, I had my back against the wall and was down but not out.

It took every ounce of energy and willpower I had, but I started taking control of my financial life and never looked back.

All those times of wondering how I would pay the bills, get to the end of the month before getting through the end of the money, and living check to check was no more.

I had prevailed against every obstacle, trial and tribulation, and test that had come up against me. There would be no more trials of continuing to go into debt against me. For I had triumphed and I had won!

I hope you enjoyed this post. I had to travel all the way back to 1981, but you have to admit that it is a great story and a spectacular adventure.

Well Greenbacks Magnets, that wraps up another post. Until next time.

Top 1% of income worldwide

Top 1% of income in the world is easier to earn than you think.

“The only way to enjoy anything in this life is to earn it first.” – Ginger Rogers

So, you want money. Well, most people do. Lots of it.

However, what do you do once you have it.

According to one of the shark tank sharks Kevin O’Leary aka ‘Mr. Wonderful’, he says there are three basic rules for money “Don’t spend too much. Mostly save. Always invest.”

From what I have learned, the problem is most spend too much, save nothing, and never invest.

First, you have to learn that you do not make money, you earn it.

Second, start putting aside 10% of what you earn.

Lastly, learn how to invest it. This could be by just picking up a few books on investing at your local library.

Boom, you just made the impossible possible. You earned money and saved it. From what I have seen most people cannot even do that. Let alone invest. Investing is how the rich stay rich, but earning a good living is how they get rich.

You have to know where you stand financially (what you earn), gather your resources (savings) and then you can plant your feet (invest).

Or put it this way, gather your acorns (earn money), plant your seeds (save money), enjoy the harvest (earned interest on money invested).

So, where do most Americans stand.

Most Americans are in the top 1% of income globally

You are in the top 1% of income worldwide with an annual salary of…drum roll please…$34,000.

Yep. You read correctly.

A recent study has shown that you do not need to earn six figures to be considered top of the heap in terms of income.

That means if you are working an entry-level job earning $35,000 a year, you are in the top 1% of income in the world.

Pour yourself a glass.

You should celebrate landing that job.

Considerably, that the average income in America is $50,000, it is safe to say that more than 50% of Americans are at the top when it comes to salary on a global scale.

Since, average means 50% are higher or lower than $50,000 on the pay scale meter, this could equate to roughly 75% of Americans making at least $34,000 or more annually. If we divide 50 in half, as we know there is a wide range that could be making between $34,000 to $50,000 or above.

That means if you are American, it is likely that you are already a one percenter in regards to income.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a gym teacher or a celebrity. Your income is top in the world in America. Cheers!

The top wealthiest in the world

In regards to wealth, you only need to have less than $3,500 in assets to be amongst the wealthiest in the world or around $760,000 to be in the top percentile, per Credit Suisse.

The Federal Reserve stated a median American family has over $80,000 in net worth in 2013, where the average family had net assets of $535,000 or higher.

Therefore, if you have less than $10,000 in wealth; which is the bulk of the global population, then you still have more wealth than those unfortunate souls at the bottom of the economic pyramid.

Wealth acquired globally

However, even though it does not take much to be at the top of the global wealth pyramid the way wealth is obtained varies greatly.

For instance, in many high-income nations; the United States for one, there is a massive amount of debt.  Whereas in many European nations or middle and low income countries the debt is considerably lower.

The approximate four billion at the bottom of the economic pyramid may lack money, but they also do not have the resources to help them acquire crippling and debilitating debt with easy credit access.

Debt is a destroyer of wealth.

Meaning that someone who lives on $5 a day in other parts of the world and has managed to save up $3,500 in assets is wealthier than a Manhattan doctor pulling in $500,000 annually, spending $510,000 a year; which is minus (-) $10,000 more than they earn, and carrying student loans of $250,000.

The doctor would have a net worth in the negative (-) $250,000 and climbing higher in debt. Sinking further below the wealth distribution chart with every year.

Unless they pay off the debt and stopping spending more than they earn, they will never experience true wealth or the freedom that comes with it.

You just have to do the numbers.

More going out than coming in and no savings = debt.

More coming in than going out and keeping it = wealth.

Ultimately, only you can decide which category you want to be in.
