Precious Stones of Wisdom: Life Lessons from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Train yourself to let go of the things you fear to lose. – George Lucas

If you have ever seen any of the Indiana Jones films, then you know they are all full of action and adventure.

However, my absolute favorite in the film franchise is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

There had some jaw dropping moments throughout the entire film.

They take you on the joyride of a lifetime in 120 minutes!

You get to see Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) at one of his most defining moments in his career. As well as, watch him put the well-being of people ahead of money and things.

The series was created from the mind of Star Wars creator George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg.

Now let’s go back to 1984! No legwarmers required! 😂

RULE #1: LISTEN

The film was released on May 8, 1984. Adventure sequel extraordinaire. The film went on to gross $333.1 million dollars at the box office.

My favorite number is 3. That is one of the 3 reasons I chose to start saving $13,333 a year.

Halle Berry on Success and Failure: Why She and I Continue To Save So Much

Here is the synopsis of the film.

Intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones, on the trail of fortune and glory in Old Shanghai, is ricocheted into a dangerous adventure in India. With his faithful companion Short Round (Jonathan Ke Quan) and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw), Indie goes in search of the magical Sankara stone, and uncovers an ancient evil which threatens all who come into contact with it.

The second of the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg Indiana Jones epics is set a year or so before the events in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1984). After a brief brouhaha involving a precious vial and a wild ride down a raging Himalyan river, Indy (Harrison Ford) gets down to the problem at hand: retrieving a precious gem and several kidnapped young boys on behalf of a remote East Indian village.

His companions this time around include a dimbulbed, easily frightened nightclub chanteuse, and a feisty 12-year-old kid named Short Round. Throughout, the plot takes second place to the thrills, which include a harrowing rollercoaster ride in an abandoned mineshaft and Indy’s rescue of the heroine from a ritual sacrifice.

In the beginning of the film, Indiana instructs his companion to stay out of the light and follow his steps exactly behind him.

Of course, the man gets greedy and this ends in a Mortal Kombat style fatality.

If you truly want to be successful, you must learn to listen to those that are more knowledgeable than you are.

That is why I listen to and read the shareholder letters of Warren Buffet.

He says stay away from debt and ALWAYS have cash reserves.

This simplistic and basic money advice is why his company Berkshire Hathaway has the most expensive stock on the NYSE at over $300,000!

According to The Motely Fool, one takeaway from the annual shareholder letter (which are excellent reading sources for learning about investing and life) is the following: At the end of 2018, Berkshire Hathaway had nearly $112 billion of cash and equivalents on its balance sheet, officially consisting of $30.4 billion in cash and $81.5 billion in short-term Treasuries.

You must have cash if you are to build wealth.

RULE #2: FOCUS ON WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT

There is a scene in the film where our hero is poisoned. But, there is a cure.

The anecdote is rolling around on the floor and so are millions of dollars in diamonds in a small jewelry bag.

Willie comes across the anecdote while trying to find the diamonds. Instead of casually dismissing it as many might have, she picks it up and puts it in a safe place. This ultimately saves Indiana’s life.

There are times in your life when you will have to choose: right or left.

I prefer to choose the path of least resistance but also the one that will help the most people.

Remember: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

In The Wrath of Khan (1982), Spock says, “Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” Captain Kirk answers, “Or the one.” This sets up a pivotal scene near the end of the film.

RULE #3: WHEN IN DOUBT, RUN

Indiana comes across another archaeologist that steals his stone he just risked his life to get!

Instead of trying to fight for it, he lets the man take it. While the man is distracted with his patting himself on the back and his own vanity, Indiana makes a run for it! And keeps his life long enough to fight another day.

The same rules apply when buying stocks or spending money.

If the risk is too high for you, then sell. You will sleep better at night. Forget trying to get you money back. That is like gambling in Vegas.

Or if you just so happen to come across someone in a nice suit and briefcase that promises to double your money, pass.

There is no such thing as guarantees. All risk involves possible losses. That is why you do your homework and take calculated risks.

If it sounds too good to be true, RUN!!!

In the book called Winning the Money Game: Lessons Learned from the Financial Fouls of Pro Athletes by Adonal Foyle. He was an NBA player who describes the things he says while playing in the league in regards to how other athletes dealt with financial management or lack thereof.

He that said you should learn the basics of money and that you should rule your money or money will rule you. He saw many people lose homes, cars, wives, and careers.

In addition, he said you should audit anyone who comes into contact with your money. That includes family. Even your MOM!!! Shocking right???

RULE #4: FOOD IS FUEL, BUT NOT ENTERTAINMENT

One of the absolute best scenes in the film is the dinner scene.

I will not give too much away, but let’s just say the room is full of snakes! LITERALLY!

They say health equals wealth.

Let’s say you are investing for the long-term (as you should be!). Then in order to realize those gains, you must live long enough to see them.

That requires you to eat your three square meals, lots of fruits, nuts, berries, leafy greens and veggies. In addition, drink mostly water and tea.

This will alleviate 90% of ailments that are associated with poor diet.

Food is not for taste; it is for nutrition.

And please, no smoking.

RULE #5: THE KIDS ARE OUR FUTURE

Indy sees that children need his help. He does not turn his back on them. He helps them.

They are more precious than any stone.

People were always more important to him than things or money.

Money And Greek Myths: Lessons From Clash Of The Titans

Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. – W. C. Fields

That quote from W.C. Fields could not more accurately describe this film. The Gods of Olympus rule the world of man. And those who disobey or hurt others are punished.

I have learned that my attitude dictates everything around me including my ability to build wealth. A positive attitude can move mountains.

This mythical tale of Perseus, son of Zeus, and his quest for the ‘fair’ Andromeda,  Clash of the Titans was released on June 12, 1981.

Why is Greek mythology important?

Greek mythology is the body of myths originally told by the ancient Greeks. These stories concern the origin and the nature of the world, the lives and activities of deities, heroes, and mythological creatures, and the origins and significance of the ancient Greeks‘ own cult and ritual practices.

Review for the film with an excellent synopsis from IMBD # 8 from 2004.

In the Mount Olympus, Zeus (Laurence Olivier) destroyed the city Argus with the Titan Kraken to punish King Acrisius (Donald Houston) that sentenced his daughter Danae (Vida Taylor) and her son with Zeus Perseus to death in the sea. Zeus orders Poseidon to save them and Perseus grows up in a paradisiacal island with his mother.

Years later, Zeus punishes Calibos (Neil McCarthy), the evil son of the goddess Thetis (Maggie Smith) and fiancé of Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker), turning him into a monster doomed to live in the swamps.

The vindictive Thetis curses Andromeda with a spell and every suitor should solve a riddle; otherwise he would be sentenced to the bonfire. Further, she brings Perseus (Harry Hamlin) while sleeping half-naked to the City of Jopa but Zeus gives magical helmet, shield and sword to his son for self-protection.

When Perseus sees Andromeda, he falls in love with her and uses the magic outfits and Pegasus to discover the answer of the riddle with Calibos.

But Thetis dooms Andromeda to be sacrificed to the Kraken otherwise the City of Jopa and the inhabitants will be destroyed by the Titan. Perseus now has to defeat Medusa and the Kraken to save his beloved princess.

The saga of Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, and the intrigue among the Gods of Olympus, is brilliant presented in this magnificent film. The delightful story is supported by an outstanding international cast, with names such as Laurence Olivier, Burgess Meredith, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress, and by fantastic special effects, considering this is a 1981 movie. The golden mechanical owl Buba is hilarious and responsible for some of the best moments in this film. This epic is a wonderful and highly recommended entertainment for the whole family. I do not recall how many times I have had the pleasure of watching this film.

WEALTH IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HUMILITY

Zeus watches over everyone in Mount Olympus. Especially, that of his children and those of the other Gods, many of whom have children with mortals.

It has become known that Thetis’ son Calibos, who has been spoiled and given every advantage in life, is cold and callous. He abuses and hurts others. For this, Zeus punishes him. His son Perseus, who was given none of those advantages or indulgences of Calibos, is punished by Thetis in retaliation and dropped in the middle of their war between each other.

I found it very interesting that Zeus was willing to punish Calibos for being inhumane and uncivilized. He let the punishment fit the crime.

This is a reminder that life is not fair and no deed goes unnoticed, good or bad.

You should live your life like it will hit the front page of every newspaper. Best to eat humble pie than be served a dish that is best served cold.

WITH MONEY COMES POWER AND WEALTH BRINGS PROTECTION

Being in power means you can make things happen. If you read the stories of Napoleon Bonaparte, The War of the Roses, Winston Churchill, or any leader or influencer you will find a theme.

Success leaves clues.

Regardless, of whether or not you are born into wealth, it is your job to manage all that you have. This is done by controlling your thoughts and actions.

Did you know that most generational wealth is gone within three generations?

According to MarketWatch, about seven in 10 wealthy families lose their fortune by the second generation, according to a study of more than 3,200 high-net worth families by the Williams Group wealth consultancy. By the third generation that number has jumped to 90%.

That means the parents and grandparents make the money, and the children and grandchildren spend it.

After doing some more research, I discovered the following:

  • If you earn more than $34,000 per year, you are in the top 1 percent globally.
  • Most wealth is not inherited. You have to work for your meal. There is no FREE LUNCH.
  • According to the book The Millionaire Next Door, most millionaires are worth between $1 million to $5 million.

See my post the Top 1% of income worldwide

In the film, Zeus provides Perseus with incredible weapons that are magical to protect him. This would not have been possible if his father did not have access to those things.

The reason you want to have financial independence is because you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

FIND YOUR PASSION AND CREATE YOUR FINANCIAL DESTINY

Perseus gets sent to Jopa where Calibos ex-fiance is cursed by his mother Thetis. He decides to find out the answer to the riddle so that he may marry the princess Andromeda.

One of my favorite parts of the film right here. Perseus was smart in the way he found the answer. This is what you are supposed to do in life. Find a goal. Make a plan. Execute. Same rules apply to personal finance.

I set a goal of saving first 10% of my income. Then it kept growing from there. I set the following savings goals:

  • Save 15% of my income
  • Save 20% of my income
  • Save 25% of my income
  • Save 30% of my income
  • Save 35% of my income
  • Save 40% of my income
  • Save 45% of my income
  • Save 50% of my income ➡this is my next goal 💰😉

WE ONLY WANT JUSTICE

If you cannot be a good winner, there is no way you can be a good loser. – Halle Berry

See my post on Halle Berry and success

After Perseus defeats Calibos, he spares his life only if he lifts the cure on Andromeda and he agrees.

He then goes to demand his mother seek out vengeance on Perseus. This is wrong. Perseus won in a fair fight with hand-to-hand combat. However, his mother does what he asks. Thereby putting Perseus on another quest to yet again save Andromeda and risking his life in the process although he committed no crime. He must now face Medusa.

NEEDS VS WANTS

Knowing what your needs versus wants are is how you will achieve your goals.

Perseus must face Medusa in order to save Andromeda.

Who is Medusa?

In Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, a Gorgon, generally described as a winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Those who gazed upon her face would turn to stone.

What is the legend of Medusa? In later myths (mainly in Ovid) Medusa was the only Gorgon to possess snake locks, because they were a punishment from Athena. In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid (Metamorphoses 4.770), Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, “the jealous aspiration of many suitors.” Accordingly, Ovid relates that the once beautiful mortal was punished by Athena with a hideous appearance and loathsome snakes for hair for having been in Athena’s temple and being pursued by Poseidon.

Simply put, she was punished for being too beautiful.

In the film, Perseus only did what is absolutely necessary. Veering off course, even just a little could spell disaster. Same goes for wealth building.

TRIUMPHANT AND SUCCESS AT LAST

Perseus wins.

Zeus declares:

No more trials against Perseus for he has confronted them and he has won.

The gods predict that Perseus and Andromeda will live happily, rule wisely, and produce children, and Zeus forbids the other gods to pursue vengeance against them. Zeus commands, “I forbid any revenge against Perseus.” He has triumphed and he shall be rewarded.

The constellations of Perseus, Andromeda, Pegasus, and Cassiopeia are created in their honor.

I feel that like Perseus, I have been underestimated.

It took many years to achieve the goals I had set for myself. Some of which I am still working towards. And as one is crossed off the list, others are added. However, as I once told my sister, I had my back against the wall and was down but not out.

It took every ounce of energy and willpower I had, but I started taking control of my financial life and never looked back.

All those times of wondering how I would pay the bills, get to the end of the month before getting through the end of the money, and living check to check was no more.

I had prevailed against every obstacle, trial and tribulation, and test that had come up against me. There would be no more trials of continuing to go into debt against me. For I had triumphed and I had won!

I hope you enjoyed this post. I had to travel all the way back to 1981, but you have to admit that it is a great story and a spectacular adventure.

Well Greenbacks Magnets, that wraps up another post. Until next time.

Back in 1990, the movie, The Witches, based on the 1983 children’s novel of the same title by Roald Dahl, was released in theaters. The movie premiered on 25 May 1990, in London and was scheduled to open the same day in the United States, but was delayed until August.

This is where the story begins.

GUARDIANS OF THE MILKY WAY GALAXY

While on vacation in Norway, eight-year-old American boy Luke Eveshim is warned about the witches, female demons with a boundless hatred for children and various methods of destroying or transforming them.

Helga, Luke’s Grandmother, becomes his legal guardian after the passing of his parents. They move to England. His grandmother is advised to take a vacation for a summer by the sea for fresh air after discovering she has diabetes.

Also staying at the hotel are a convention of witches, masquerading as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, with the Grand High Witch, the all-powerful leader of the world’s witches, attending their annual meeting under the name Eva Ernst (played by Academy Award Winner Angelica Houston).

Really? They have some nerve naming their coven the Prevention of Cruelty to children. Hiding in plain sight like that, but open to interpretation. Yes, indeed.

Let us examine the fact that Luke had a grandmother that not only decided to raise him, but has the financial means to take a vacation by the sea.

I have it on good authority that if you try to rent a house on Virginia Beach for a week it can set you back $5,000!

I wouldn’t mind paying that if I had investments like interest earned from stocks or royalties to pay for it.

If you have $25,000, you could earn over 2 percent in a high yield savings account. That’s the ish I’m talking about right there. Making money for breathing. That is the equivalent of doing a part-time gig and earning $500 a year.

I find the idea of earning money just for having a pulse so sexy.  I find that It’s like Beyoncé says in her song Rocket. Shhh. Just listen.  To the words. Hell yeah, you the sh*t That’s why you’re my equivalent So sexy! Haha

They know how to make their vision a reality.

You have to chart a course and follow that path to where you want to go. What path? You just point to the top and go! That’s what I learned from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson 😉

I have also learned that when you own something to hold onto it.

It doesn’t matter of it is a taco stand, food truck, or blog. If you own 100%, then it’s yours to do with as you wish. Hold on to as much equity and ownership in your company as possible. I learned that from Shark Tank’s Daymond John. Like McDonald’s does to its hamburgers, keep grinding.

And try to be cash heavy. Meaning stay away from debt. I learned that from Warren Buffet. 😉 They say his company Berkshire Hathaway aims to keep $1 billion or more in cash to snap up businesses and be able to make quick decisions when buying stocks.

In addition, they say Apple does the same. The world’s first EVER $1 trillion-dollar company keeps billions in cash.

WE ALL WANT TO BE ROYALS

And I don’t mean Prince William and Kate Middleton.

I mean getting royalty checks in the mail.

I saw an article in which Don McLean owns only 2 stocks: Google and Amazon.

I also recently read that Don McLean continues to receive royalties off his music he wrote almost 50 years ago. Yes, this artist still makes $300,000 per year from something he created in 1971.

In the article by Sovereign Man, it retells McLean’s story.

Early spring in 1971 when an obscure American folk singer wrote a song that would change his life forever.

Sitting at a café in Saratoga Springs, New York, Don McLean scribbled the lyrics to a long ballad about an experience he had as a 13-year-old boy.

It began with a radio bulletin that said that Buddy Holly had died in a plane crash. In 1959, when this happened they called it the day the music died. The boy was crushed. But the man used this emotion to write a song that would take the world by storm.

Of course, that song was “American Pie.”

It stayed atop the Billboard music charts for more than a year. And it turned this once obscure folk singer into a global sensation.

Ah yes, the power of the pen.

More than that – McLean was immediately set for life: he still makes more than $300,000 a year from that song.

Imagine getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for something you did in 1971!

That is what stocks can do for you! That is why we must invest. Unless you can write the next hit song for Beyoncé, you must invest in the stock market to make money on your money. You already earned it and now your money works for you and this is your equivalent to getting royalties.

This story holds the key to one of the greatest business models ever invented: the idea that you can create something once and get paid on it for life.

“The idea is not to live forever, it is to create something that will.” – Andy Warhol

For more information on the price of genius and Andy Warhol, see my post The Man Behind the Mohawk: An Interview with Budgets are Sexy.

It’s the royalty business. That’s right. I did the work like 20 years ago. Now cut the check!

In case you’re not familiar with the term, a royalty is a cash payment that you receive over and over again from an asset that you created, developed, or own.

For example, songwriters collect a royalty every time a song they write is played, purchased, downloaded or streamed. Some more than others.

That is why Taylor Swift was mad at Apple iTunes for giving away artists music, such as herself, for free for three months!

Image result for we don't ask for free iphones taylor swift

That’s why McLean still makes money from American Pie. You have to pay to play. Music that is. In this case anyway.

Royalties are also common in natural resources. Royalty companies often provide financing to oil and mining companies… and those borrowers pay a royalty on every ounce of gold or gallon of oil that the land produces.

Authors earn a royalty every time somebody buys their book. Inventors receive royalties from their patents. Why do you think Beyoncé trademarked Blue Ivy, Taylor Swift trademarked Swiftmas, and Cardi B is trying to trademark OKrrrrrrr?!!!

Patents equals paychecks.

And people who own royalties don’t have to do anything else to make money… except cash the checks.

The powerful cashflow of this model can be incredibly appealing to investors, and there are even some companies that specialize in acquiring assets that produce royalty income.

Therefore, if you are good at something, don’t give it away for free.

Even though I am a HUGE Marvel comics fan, I actually got the last comment mentioned above from DC Comics The Joker. 😉

It’s still true though. You have to admit.

If I could, I would tap dance on Twitter, if they paid me.

Me and my lipstick confessions charge a premium for the really good stuff.

I would hand draw or smack lipstick stickers 💋on Kylie Jenner’s lip kits if she paid me $400.

Joan Rivers wrote jokes for days. She once said jokingly, that she would, “write for Hitler for $500.”

See my post on Money gems from Joan Rivers

Whatever you do that is great, DON’T DO IT FOR FREE.

That’s just my 2 cents. And I take cash, check, or charge.

I’m like the girl scouts. Out there selling those cookies. You don’t see them giving it away for FREE.

I’m just saying. Have a plan for your life and your money, then make it happen.

Don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t accomplish or do. No matter how small you are. Even if you are just a kid.

The Witches always remind of that.

“Fashion is not about utility. An accessory is merely a piece of iconography used to express individual identity.” – The Devil Wears Prada

The film starred Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Meryl Streep. The film was a financial success and grossed millions at the box office.

What really made it great was the dialogue in the film. If you can decipher all the quips in the film, you can get some valuable money and life advice. All fiction has some truth.

Huge mortgages (for celebs this can be in the millions!)

Exotic Automobiles (BMV, Range Rovers seem to be favorites)

Property liens (foreclosures and short sales)

Thousands owed to the IRS (several celebs such as Willie Nelson and Chris Tucker owed the IRS more than $10 million dollars!)

In the film, Andy (played by Anne Hathaway) gets a job as the second assistant to Miranda Priestley (played by Meryl Streep) and works with the first assistant Emily (played by Emily Blunt) and staffer Nigel ( played by Stanley Tucci).

They regularly and casually name drop designer labels such as Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, and Oscar de la Renta.

If you look up any of these haute couture designers, you will find clothing that ranges $500 to $10,000. You could drop $25,000 in their establishments in a single visit easy. The fact that you could turn that money into a fortune from investing is lost on those that buy these clothes.

JOB OR CAREER

Image result for the devil wears prada gif

If you ever watched that Chris Rock comedy special where he talks about the difference between a job and a career, then you understand what I mean by this.

A job pays the bills.

You watch the clock waiting for it to hit 5 o’clock and rush out of work like the building is on fire.

With a career, there is never enough time. You don’t watch the clock. You work for the sheer joy it brings you. The paycheck is a bonus in recognition of and a result by dint of hard work in excelling at what you do because of your drive and passion.

In the movie, Andy is working in this job to land a bigger and better one down the road. That is all well and good, except for the fact that Miranda is a slave driver.

See my post Jobs that pay $70,000 a year

MANSIONS OR STUDIO APARTMENTS

If you do some research, you can find what are the most expensive zip codes in America and the world.

According to Forbes, this would be 94027 in Atherton, CA where the median price of a home is $9,686,154.

You see the stark contrast of living conditions in the film. Andy lives in a small walk-up apartment in New York, while Miranda lives in the modern day equivalent of a palace with several floors and spacious rooms that could easily set you back for $2 million in New York.

One of the biggest expenses in any budget is housing. The trifecta of expenses is housing, food, and transportation.

While listening to a podcast on BiggerPockets, I learned about house hacking.

House hacking is when you live in one of the multiple units of your investment property as your primary residence, and have renters from the other units pay your mortgage and expenses.

If you can cut your expenses in this area, you are g2g (Good to Go). 😉

Please do not get caught up in the zip code and school district rat race. I say this because people will buy properties they cannot afford in good school districts and pay astronomical property taxes instead of investing that money. This can lead to retirement shortfalls if you are not careful.

My advice is to buy what you can afford and save the difference. Truth be told, when I looked up profiles on Facebook, I noticed that folks I knew that went to private school ended up going to the same colleges as everyone else including myself.

Matter of fact, I know folks that were “C” students in high school and still managed to eke out an existence and graduate from a flagship university while some private school kids went to second tier state schools. Go figure.

Home Buying: Survival of the Fittest Wallet

Less Home, More Wealth

You could live in a safe but affordable neighborhood, drive Hondas, and put that money to work in a 401k or 529 college savings plan instead of paying high mortgages and property taxes. That would pay for college right there. I’m just saying.

BEAMERS, BENZ, AND BENTLEYS

There was a hilarious scene in the film where she tells Andy not to take public transportation. EVER!

I cannot say I agree with this. Let me tell you why. Public transportation can save you thousands in annual costs sue to lowering the cost of mainteannce and repair bills on your car. You could also forgo a car all together and have no car payment or maintenance and gas to deal with!

See my post Are car loans worth giving up $1 million dollars?

PEOPLE ARE THE GREATEST ASSETS

So, many people are working the 9-to-5 grind and in the rat race living check to check, but at the end have very little to show for it. Nothing in savings. Nothing in retirement. Nothing in the bank period.

For every dollar you earn, I suggest you find a way to stash away 5% of what you earn and slowly start increasing your savings rate monthly or annually by 1% or more. This will get you in the habit of saving and also allow you to start building an emergency fund.

Money and Life Lessons I Learned from Mr. T

During the film, Andy talks about getting some amazing job as a writer. However, this job is all about paying her dues.

You do not get something for nothing. You have to give to get. That’s the bottom-line.

Building strong relationships is to key to growth and a happy life. People rarely look back and say I wish I could have worked more!

Take pictures today. In 20 years, you will be glad you did. In reality, people think more about the things they didn’t do instead of the things they actually did.

So, stop and smell the roses while you can. Right now! Bend down and smell the flowers, take that trip, go visit family, make those phone calls, send that email, write that letter, hit send on that text message and stay in contact with those you love and care about.

No one cares about who dies with the most toys. People care about what type of person you are.

If you remember that episode of Golden Girls, Sophia wanted to know who would show up at her funeral, so she spread the word of her passing.

The people who show up are the ones who care.

Your legacy is not built in things, but lasts in the minds and memories of the people whose lives you’ve touched or changed in some significant way.

Money will not and cannot buy true friendship or loyalty. If you are watching the news right now, you can see that for yourself firsthand with Michael Cohen.

Focus your energy on doing good things and good work so you will not ever have to look back and regret.

You will only look back and smile.

5 Wealthy Nuggets of Wisdom from The Count of Monte Cristo

All human wisdom is summed up in two words; wait and hope. – Alexandre Dumas, author of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers

As I am sure by now you can tell, that I like to not only be entertained, but to entertain my readers as well. Well, this blog post du jour will be no different. One of my favorite stories is one that was written many years ago.

This tale has it all. Money. Lust. Power. Greed. Revenge.

I am sure many out there have heard of the book called The Count of Monte Cristo. It was written by Alexandre Dumas in 1844. Although, the book’s origin is over 200 years old, its plot is just as poignant today as it was then.

The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean. The Italian island of Monte Cristo is where the protagonist in this story derives his name. The historical events in the novel happen between 1815-1839, during the time Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled. A true adventure tale that involves the themes of betrayal, hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness.

The plot involves a young sailor that is wrongfully accused of a crime he did not commit.  Falsely convicted with no trial and imprisoned, he escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets out a plan to exact revenge on those who conspired against him.

His name is Edmund Dantes. And this is his story.

ALL WEALTH BUILDING STARTS WITH INCOME

Money Nugget One: You must earn money to save money. Frugality allows you to save more money.

In order to even start building wealth, you have to have income. Money needs to come in before you can start saving any. But make no mistake, all wealth building starts with saving. Once you have money to save then you have to allocate funds to savings.

Please do not discredit the act of saving and frugality. It is far easier to slash expenses and save then it is to make more money.

Work with what you have. It will be far harder to save once you start making more money. So, start saving while you have small sums so you will already be in the habit to do so when you have large sums.

And make time to spend on fun. Do not cut back on fun. Spend more on fun. It will give you the energy and inspire you to earn and save more money. So that you can have even more fun.

I started by reviewing my bank statements and seeing what I was spending.

I made the decision to get rid of as many fixed expenses as possible. In addition, as I paid off debt I would incrementally up my savings.

I started with $1 a day. That was $365 a year. Then went to $50 per month and so on until I finally reached $13,333.06 a year. I cut out tons of subscriptions and services I didn’t need or wasn’t using. Once I saw how much I could save and in such a short time period, as I went from saving $3k a year to $13k a year within 12 months, I started realizing the power of saving.

You can read all about it in my ebook How to crush debt and save $10,000 every single year and other posts I have written from October 2018 through February 2019.

In the film, Edmond (played by Jim Caviezel) is a Second Mate of a French merchant vessel. It starts in 1815. As their ship’s captain is ill, Edmond commands the ship to stop on the island of Elba. Napoleon Bonaparte offers the help of his physician’s services if Edmond will deliver a letter. And is sworn to secrecy.

Keep in mind, Napoleon is in exile and any correspondence delivered from him would be considered to be treason to the French monarchy as he is an enemy to the crown.  The letter was to be delivered to a powerful politician’s father.  You can pretty much guess where the story is headed.

Upon his return home to Marseille, he is rewarded for his bravery and promoted to captain over another gentleman that was First Mate by the name of Danglars and at the ire of his friend, Fernand
Mondego (played by Guy Pearce). This provided Edmond with enough income to marry his fiancée, Mercedes (played by Dagmara Dominczyk).

However, before that happens, Edmond must deliver the letter he promised. He gives it inadvertently to the son of the man the letter was meant for. The politician J.F. Villefort (played by James Frain) said the letter was treasonous. It is revealed that Edmond could not read. All was good until he said the name of who was to receive the letter. Upon hearing his father’s name and knowing it would ruin his political career, Villefort burned the letter and ordered Edmond to be arrested.

RICH IS RELATIVE

Money Nugget Two: Rich is relative

Edmond escapes arrest and goes to his friend Fernand’s house. His father is a count and he goes there for help and protection. However, his friend turns him in to the gendarmes (the French police). As he is arrested, he gives Edmond a chess piece as that is game they used to play as a parting gift.

Then Edmond asks, “why?” He replies that he should not envy the son of a fisherman or someone not of noble birth. That’s cold.

At this point in the film, you are reeling. A good man has been falsely accused and arrested. Put away in prison for life because he was a pawn in a much bigger scheme. One he was unaware of.

Let’s stop and think for a second.

Let’s meet the money players. Because everything always comes back to money. If you truly want to know something., then follow the money.

Villefort is a well-known, connected, and in a respectable position of a salaried politician.

Image result for danglars the count of monte cristo

Danglars is an educated shipman.

Fernand is the son of a count, wealthy, of noble birth and education.

Image result for guy pearce

Edmond Dantes is none of those things. He had to work for every dime. He is poor and illiterate. When a sacrifice had to be made and a lamb had to be slaughtered, the sacrificial lamb was a poor man. Just something to think about right there.

Although, these people have money and connections, all of them disliked a man of no means, who lacked money, prestige, position, power, and education.

Money will not make you happy as you can clearly see from above.

Money itself has no power. It is what you do with it that gives it meaning or power. It does have the power change lives ad make life easier, but that’s about it. Therefore, rich is relative. It is what you perceive it to be.

Perception is reality.

Rich is different for everyone.

 NEGLECT CAN BE AN ALLY

Money Nugget Three: You can build a fortune without anyone knowing. Stealth wealth anyone?

One of the best parts of the film happens while Edmond is in prison. After six years, he meets a fellow prisoner by the name of Faria (played by Richard Harris), who was once a general in Napoleon’s army. He himself has been imprisoned for 11 years because he would not divulge the whereabouts of a secret treasure; the treasure of Spada.

Faria asks Edmond to help him dig tunnels to escape the prison. They barter. Edmond will only help if the man will teach him how to read. Faria agrees. In addition, he also teaches him how to fight.

Over the next 7 years, Edmond becomes a scholar and a swordsman.

This was made possible because the guards completely ignored and shunned them. Their neglect became their ally.

This is similar to a story I read in Millionaire Women Next Door. While a young woman’s parents were ignoring her, she built up a healthy work ethic and saving plan that helped turn her into a millionaire as an adult. Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot be anything you want to be. If it is important to you, then you will find a way.

If I hear one more person tell me they do not have time to read personal finance books, I’m going to start a bull**it jar and put $20 bucks into it every time I hear that. By the end of 3 years, I will probably have enough to buy a car with cash.

If you have time to surf the Web, spend hours on Twitter, or read Facebook posts, then you can read about finance.

Now, I need your undivided attention for this next part. Reminder that glass of wine I mentioned earlier? Well, I need you to put it down for one minute.

Once you get all this knowledge, then put it to use. Start investing. Even better, after you grow your fortune, tell no one. Then they can’t hit you up for gifts and interest free loans.

Think I’m joking? Look up bankrupt, broke, or rich NBA players and see interviews where they talk about how friends, hangers-ons, and family members ask them for money.

I regularly tell people I am just out here trying to make it, you know, trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents. Whatever will distract them from asking me about my money.

Sure, I have money in the bank. However, I am not a bank.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Money Nugget Four: There is power in getting an education.

After one conversation, Edmond was very upset. Faria helped him figure out who, how, what, and why he was sent to prison for life. That is when Edmond decides he wants justice. He must live and get out of prison.

Faria is hurt badly in prison, but before he dies, he tells Edmond where the secret treasure is hidden and provides him with a map. Knowing this was his chance to escape, Edmond hatches a plan to get out of prison. After he escapes, he runs into a band of pirates and befriends them.

He then sets off to see old acquaintances and in search of the lost treasure.

After getting the information he required on all his old enemies and his nemesis, Fernand, he finds the treasure.

Once a poor man, he is now the richest man in Marseille. He gives himself a new identity; a count. And a new name: Count of Monte Cristo.

MONEY OFFERS PROTECTION

Image result for count of monte cristo 2002 fight

Money Nugget Five: Money attracts money. Money also provides protection.

Edmond Dantes is no more. The Count of Monte Cristo is what he is referred to from this moment on. Everywhere he goes, people hang on to his every word. No one dares to disrespect or cross him to his face, but they will behind his back.

There are some excellent parts in the film as to what he does with his money and how he acquires his home. He is also careful with his identity. He guards it close. He is aloof and cold but not recalcitrant. He is very respectful to all levels of gentry no matter how noble or what manner of nobility a man is. An inferior or low ranking birth means nothing to him. Only power.

You’ll see what I mean in this scene from the film.

In the illustrious words of Charlotte’s Web, “Salutations.” Or in the case of Monte Cristo, “Greetings.” 😉 Now this is how you make an entrance! This is my favorite scene in the film.

Monte Cristo is nobody’s fool. He has been to both sides of the island. Having been voted off the island of poverty so many years ago, he knows which side to be on.

Money is not only a tool, but one of protection. You can afford to pay your fare and your fair share of any financial obligations. Financial mediocrity is a fool’s game. You should respect money and take care to grow your money so that you can pay your share of any bill that comes in your mailbox.

Money offers protection from eviction.

Money offers protection from sleepless nights and worrying how to pay bills.

Money offers protection from bankruptcy.

Money offers protection from poor health.

I think you get my point.

I want you to be protected. I want you to have the means to take care of yourself and your family. That is why I write. I want to help people improve the quality of their financial lives. I want you to be self-made.  I want you to be a financial rock star. To fulfill your dreams. And if you happen to look for suggestions on good reading materials, you can come here.

May I suggest this literacy classic be one of those books, The Count of Monte Cristo, on your road to wealth that you pick up along the way. Or check out the movie and see how the story ends.

If you enjoyed this post, then you will not regret it.

Money and Life Lessons from the film Beyond the Lights

“Truth is the only safe ground to stand on.” – Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Beyond the Lights was released November 14th 2014. I went on a rare visit to the theater that weekend because I loved the trailer with the Sia song Chandelier where she was out on that balcony. It stopped me in my tracks. So, I decided to go see the film. I was impressed and that doesn’t happen often.

I was really and pleasantly surprised by the film, but mostly the depth of the actress playing the lead, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (from the film Belle).

The fashion was amazing. All her outfits and costume choices were on FIRE. Every dress was a showstopper. And she pulled it off. The hair, the attitude, the choreography, everything.

I thought it was Rihanna when she first appeared as a music superstar on the screen. She blew me away. This actress was amazing in every scene she did. EVERY. SINGLE. SCENE.

This is the best film I have ever scene revolving or about a pop star.

When I left that theater, all I knew was a star was born. I can’t remember the last time I felt like that. The film was really touching and really moved me. She showed such a range of emotions. An excellent actress indeed.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, this is the movie info, Beyond the Lights is the story of Noni, the music world’s latest superstar. But not all is what it seems, and the pressures of fame have Noni on the edge – until she meets Kaz Nicol, a young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail. Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance. But it is ultimately Kaz’s love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be. (c) Relativity

Now, that you have the background, let’s talk about what happens beyond the lights.

EVERYONE WANTS TO COME IN 1ST

Do you want to be a runner up, or do you want to be a winner? – Noni’s mother and mom-ager, played by Minnie Driver

As a young girl, Noni has a voice like no other. Her mother notices her talent and signs her up for a talent show singing none other than the famous Nina Simone’s Blackbird.

However, the ending of this scene was very sad. It would set up the balance of power between mother and daughter that would play out for the rest of the film.

What you learn is that as important it is to win, you also must feel good about what you are doing and know why you are doing it. Passion is great, but not if you are not able to use it.

MASTERPIECE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN SUCCESS

She goes from that sweet little girl into an adult in the very next scene.  From an innocent little kitten and sweet baby angel into a video vixen.  She perfected the pop-star persona. Down to the constant changing of her very detailed nail designs. See for yourself.

This scene is immediately followed up by her first music award win.

Noni does not seem very happy.

I always thought lots of people wanted this success. Which her mother states several times throughout the film.

It is not enough just to have success, if it is not done the right way.

ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN’T GOLD

Noni can no longer take the fake life she has set herself up in. She doesn’t want to do this anymore.

What I learned here is that if you no longer hold your head up high and can look yourself in the mirror, then what’s the point. You have to treat yourself with the utmost self-respect.

All around her there was a lack of respect for her as a woman and an artist. You have to tell people how you want to be treated. People can only do what you let them. Speak up and talk to a doctor or adult and let them know how you feel. Don’t let anyone silence you into submission.

NEED TO FREE UP THE SCHEDULE

Sometimes you just have to be free. You can’t work yourself non-stop and to the bone.

There were times when there was just no light in Noni’s eyes. It was sad to see her so hurt. This woman has a record contract and is about to release an album. She is staying in the best hotels and holding press conferences. The only problem was that no one wanted to hear what she had to say.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?

Progress rarely comes from those who are content and secure. It comes from those who are unsettled by what they’ve seen. – Kaz, played by Nate Parker

THE PRESSURE IS REAL WHEN YOU ARE SELLING A FANTASY

MILES HIGH AND YET STILL SO FAR FROM HAPPINESS

IT’S LONELY AT THE TOP

Best music scene in the film, the performance of Private Property by Noni.

The music was so good in the film that it felt like she could have been an artist. I liked the soundtrack, but you wanted more Noni.

The songs were great. Very pop feel. That’s because they were written by none other than The Dream (he wrote Beyonce’s Single Ladies and Rihanna’s Umbrella).

MONEY IS HOLLOW AND EMPTY

At one point, she tells him this is my new crib. A swanky place in Los Angeles. It looked every bit of a million dollar bachelorette pad. Yet, she was miserable.

Money is just a tool. It is not good or bad. Your actions give it meaning and power. I have learned to choose wisely if I am going to spend my dime. I watch my coins carefully and spend wisely.

See the film for yourself

It has been 4 years, and no matter how many times I see this film it makes me feel something bigger is going on behind all those lights. If even a fraction of this film is what some artists have gone threw, I know some changes need to be made in how we treat people and how we listen to them.
