Top of the morning to you! Happy Monday! On this sunny day in December, Christmas is a mere 13 days away. Some people are already receiving excellent Christmas gifts in the form of overtime pay.
And I thought having that in my retirement accounts was good news. That is a Merry Christmas present indeed. Let’s get right to it!
I know some of you out there haven’t heard from me in the blogosphere for some time now. But you know what, I feel like Dr. Dre in Forgot About Dre.
I’ve been busy behind the scenes trying to get this blog off and my finances to newer heights! I never left you.
And to prove that I’m still here back better and stronger than ever, I will be posting some new articles here in the near future about climbing that millionaire ladder and moving on up to a deluxe apartment in the sky.
The stock market is minting millionaires every day. Let Mr. Market make you richer whilst you sit back and sip Mojitos letting your hard earned dollars work for you. Let the money flock to you like ducks to water or a moth to a flame.
Thanks to the IRS tax code, you can now contribute $20,500 in 2022 to your 401k. I’m going to ride that pony into the million-dollar sunset. TE-HEY! You should do the same. Save until it hurts. Invest until you owe so little in taxes you rival the tax returns of Jeff Bezos and Amazon for the last few year paying $0 in taxes.
That is because the more you invest, the less you pay in income taxes. But enough about all that. Let’s talk about these $300,000 sanitation workers shall we?
That was 2016. Many were left scratching their heads wondering just how could someone sign up for overtime almost every day, work 361 days in the year, and earn $162,000 in overtime pay. Not me. The system allowed no limit on overtime, so he got it. End of story.
Let’s say that after taxes was able to bank enough to max out his 401k for the next five years. In 2016, the IRS contribution limit was $18,000.
So, hypothetically speaking, if you invested that same amount annually for five years would invest that would be $90,000 cash in the market. During that time, $18,000 per year could grow into $124,431.47. If he let that money sit in the market without adding another dime of his base pay or overtime, that could turn into $1,003,205 over 20 years. He would become a millionaire based on one year of overtime pay.
Now let’s fast forward to 2021. Sanitation workers in NYC have earned upwards of $300,000 and receiving $153,000 in overtime pay. Cha-ching! Bank that money baby! They too can turn this windfall into riches by simply investing this money.
The NASDAQ has gone up 750% since 2009. No time like the present to invest. Brokerages have not only gone to $0 trade commissions, but companies have also recorded record high turnout in 2020 and 2021 of new customers entering the market and signing up on their platforms.
If these overtime kings put that money to work, they can make a fortune.
All this from one year of overtime pay. With many companies not even offering overtime, that is awesome that these guys are able to not only make a living but even build wealth off of it. Therefore, college admissions counselors everywhere beware! Haha! No $100,000 MBA required!
“We shall see the crumbs of bread… and they will show us our way home again.” – Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, 1812
Breadcrumbs are a series of connected pieces of information or evidence. People often refer to money as bread. The Grimm Brothers used breadcrumbs in their fairy-tale Hansel and Gretel for the protagonists to find their way.
Money gems are being dropped everywhere. If you look hard
enough. You can only find what you are looking for. So, look no further.
Greenbacks Magnet is about to show you where to look. Just follow the
money…breadcrumbs that is.
But first, who are the Brothers Grimm?
WHO ARE THE GRIMM BROTHERS?
“Some men are born to good luck: all they do or try to do
comes right—all that falls to them is so much gain—all their geese are
swans—all their cards are trumps—toss them which way you will, they will
always, like poor puss, alight upon their legs, and only move on so much the
faster. The world may very likely not always think of them as they think of
themselves, but what care they for the world? what can it know about the
matter?” ― The Brothers Grimm, The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales
The Brothers Grimm Jacob and Wilhelm, were German academics,
linguists, and authors who together collected and published folklore during the
19th century. They are best known for the publication of their works titled Grimm’s Fairy Tales in 1812. The book
contains 209 tales collected by the Brothers Grimm.
Some of their most famous tales include: Rapunzel,
Cinderella, The Valiant Little Tailor, Snow White and Red Rose, Briar-Rose,
King Thrushbeard, How Six Men Got On in the World, Rumpelstiltskin, Bearskin,
The Dancing Princesses (The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes), The Four Skillful
Brothers, and Hansel and Gretel.
My absolute favorite is Bearskin. A close second is the
Twelve Dancing Princesses. Both tales had flair and a lot of truth in them. The
antagonist in Bearskin reminds me Smeagol from The Lord of the Rings film, but that’s another story.
It has been so long since I have seen these tales, but I have never forgotten them and their theme of morality. I still use these stories as reminders to help others and do the right thing. For your entertainment, I have uploaded the videos from the Grimms’ Fairy Tales Classics from the late 1980’s. The show also ran reruns in the 1990’s.
The University of Pittsburgh has an online Grimm Brothers’ Home Page where you can read their classic tales. However, be forewarned that their stories did not always have the Happy Endings you are used to hearing in the more modern versions and retelling of the stories. They are, for lack of a better word, grimmer. Very different from another world-famous fairy tales author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). One of his most notable works was The Little Mermaid. It was turned into a Disney film in 1989 and is also my favorite Disney movie.
I digress, let’s get back to the real reason for this post, the television show Grimm.
WHAT IS GRIMM?
Opening: “There once was a man who lived a life so strange, it had to be true. Only he could see what no one else can—the darkness inside, the real monster within, and he’s the one who must stop them. This is his calling. This is his duty. This is the life of a Grimm.“
Grimm is an American fantasy police procedural drama television series that aired on NBC from October 28, 2011 to March 31, 2017, for 123 episodes, over six seasons.
The story followed the journey of a Portland police homicide detective by the name of Nick Burkhardt (played by David Giuntoli), who is a Grimm. A Grimm keeps the peace and world order between humanity and the supernatural, which are called Wesen.
What made this show so great was not so much just the title character, but all the characters who played his friends around him. This is one of the first and only shows where I have ever seen the supporting cast be just as important as the main character.
The show was also at times very funny. In addition, whenever the Grimm was discovered by Wesen, they would morph into their true selves and this made every episode fun, surprising, and unique.
The supporting cast consisted of the following actors: Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee, Bree Turner, and Claire Coffee. The shows fight scenes were amazing. And the shows themes of the constant testing of morality was ever-present and consistent throughout the show just like that of the Grimm Fairy Tales. Each episode also started off with a quote from one of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales and let you know what that episode would be about.
“When words fail music speaks. – Hans Christian Andersen
In the opening scene of the Pilot espisode, The Eurhythmics Song Sweet Dreams is playing. This song ultimately led them to solve a case they were working on. When interrogating him they got nothing. It wasn’t what the perp said, it was what he sang or hummed. Gotta love music.
Hank: What’s that song?
Nick: Sweet Dreams.
Hank: Eurythmics. One of their better. [sings] “Sweet
dreams are made of these. Who am I to disagree…?”
GRIMM CAREERS
Opening quote:
“I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to
roar….” – Of Man and Mouse, Grimm, Season 1, episode 9
As you know career choice is very important, it can mean the
difference of having wealth and abundance or starvation and penury. And no
wants a Dickensian existence of poverty. So, choose wisely.
Get the education and training you need to succeed. However, I say do so affordably. It behooves you to do so. You could be stuck depending on others for their help and expertise when you’re in a pinch. Such as the likes of Monroe as Nick’s reluctant informant.
Monroe: What did you just get the books tonight?
Nick: You know about the books?
Another episode, like many…
Nick: Monroe, I need your help.
“What am I, your personal Grimmopedia?” – Monroe to Nick
I say do all you can to depend on self. You will always have
your own back. Otherwise, you have to depend on others for their help to remain
relevant in the workforce.
Monroe: Hello?
Nick: Hey, it’s Nick?
Monroe: How did you get my new cell phone?!
Nick: Are you kidding me? I’m a cop.
Too funny.
And don’t put all your money in the company stock.
It could go bankrupt and you could end up with nothing. Worse yet, people could leave you to clean up their mess or you could be left holding the bag. One word: Enron.
Do not walk, run down to your HR department and make sure they offer investments other than stock options mostly in their firm. Demand to have more options if you don’t. If not, open a Roth IRA and pick funds outside your company. Be aggressive. It’s your money dammit.
I think of myself like Brad Pitt said in the movie Troy, “We are lions.”
I am a lioness. I go for the gold. If one thing does not work, I get to work finding another way or pick another path.
To be successful, you must adapt. Like the Navy Seals were
taught in that movie Heartbreak Ridge; Navy SEALs Learn To Adapt, Improvise and
Overcome. Special Forces (United States Army) has a motto: De Oppresso Liber.
Which is Latin for “to free from oppression” or “to liberate the
oppressed.” The United States Navy Seals mottos are: “The Only Easy
Day Was Yesterday”, “It Pays to be a Winner.” Seeing a theme
here.
Your greatest asset is your mind and your ability to work.
Earning is what will help you build wealth. You cannot save money, if you have
no money.
You know who else agrees with me? Rambo. Check out the scene for yourself here.
Although, a fictional character, Rambo was trained in
Guerilla warfare. His objective was to win. However, he still had a moral
obligation to help others and he did. In life people make choices, he made his.
You will have to decide for yourself what is important to you because when it
is, you will find a way.
Below are the careers of the cast of characters on the show
and their median salaries according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,
Payscale, or Glassdoor, which are the following:
Nick Burkhart – Detective ($65,860)
Hank (Nick’s partner played by Russell Hornsby) – Detective (65,860)
Wu (played by Reggie Lee) – Sergeant ($69,685)
Juliette (played by Bitsie Tulloch) – Veterinarian ($106,770)
Monroe (Nick’s right-hand man played by Silas Weir Mitchell)
– Woodworker ($30,192)
Sean Renard (Nick and Hank’s police captain played by Sasha
Roiz) – Captain ($80,593)
Rosalee (Monroe’s wife played by Bree Turner) – Retail shop store
owner ($38,000)
Adalind Schade (played by Claire Coffee) – Lawyer ($114,000)
GRIMM INHERITANCE
“One feather is of no use to me, I must have the whole
bird.” ― Jacob Grimm, The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales
According to the book The
Millionaire Next Door, 80-86% of millionaires in America are self-made. Most
wealth is earned. Meaning less than 20% inherit their wealth. This is down from
a high of 50% or more who did so around the early 1900’s.
In the show, his aunt comes to visit to pass down to him his birthright. A trailer full of artifacts, heirlooms, and antiques that are priceless as they are irreplaceable and is full of Grimm and Wesen lore. It comes in handy throughout the series. And don’t forget the key.
This shows that what a family member does in the past can be
of significant value to their loved ones in the future. Work hard today to help
your future generations tomorrow. Case in point, Nick was always consulting
with the books in the trailer as a guide to help him in the show. Without the
books, he would have been lost. Had he been left to fend for himself, there could
have been dire consequences.
However, in the present day, most people are not receiving
large inheritances at all, if any. You are better off figuring out a profession
prior to even starting college. You can look for one that pays well such as
business, accounting, and engineering or are of interest to you.
WHAT MONEY BREADCRUMBS ARE THERE?
“Hansel took his little sister by the hand, and followed the
pebbles which shone like newly-coined silver pieces, and showed them the way.” ―
Jacob Grimm, Grimm’s Fairy Tales: Complete Edition & Over 200 Fairy Tales
Take a look around you. Who do you see doing well? Study what they study. Read what they read. Find out what they are doing? But make sure its legit and legal.
What products are selling like hotcakes off the shelves?
Invest in that company.
I’m sure you catch my drift.
Look for clues. Success leaves clues.
PRETTY GRIMM TO HAVE NO INHERITANCE
Opening quote:
“‘No,’ said the King. I’d rather die than place you in such great danger
as you must meet with in your journey.” – The Water of Life, Grimm Brothers
from the Grimm episode The
Inheritance
One episode showed Adalind meeting with a lawyer about her
mother’s estate. Not only did her mother had no assets, but she hadn’t paid her
taxes in like six years. In addition, her storage unit was only paid up to the
end of the month. After, that her stuff would be auctioned off or thrown away. This
is all too common nowadays.
Like I said before, most people do not receive inheritances
and if they do, it is not likely to be more than a few thousand dollars. You
are better off working to build your own fortune. Then it will not matter what
other people do with their money.
A GRIMM PRICE TO PAY
Opening quote:
“For me there are neither locks nor bolts, whatsoever I desire is
mine.” – The Master Thief, Grimm Brothers
Another episode showed that more artifacts were found that belonged to a Grimm in Europe. When Monroe’s uncle offered to sell it to Nick he asked for something like $250,000. Nick didn’t have that kind of money. Especially, on a cop’s salary. That’s a lot of money.
Monroe said that to his uncle. He said that was his price
and left.
Not being able to get your hands on a significant amount of
cash fairly quickly is a way to miss out on opportunities. You should always
have liquid cash in savings or a stash you can tap for emergencies. I started
my emergency fund with $25. My rainy day fund now consists of me saving over
$14,000 a year. I learned how important having a money stash from the fictional
character Scrooge McDuck.
Opening quote:
“It is not light that we need, but fire.” – Season 5, episode 1, The Grimm Identity
Lots of fight sequences happen at Nick’s house. So many that Monroe told Nick he should move.
I gave Monroe the slow clap. I had been thinking that very thing for like 2 seasons. Too many people knew where he lived.
There are times when jobs dry up. Factories and businesses
close. Like they said in the old days: Go West, young man! Or There’s gold in
them there hills! That lit a fire under mens a$$es to move with a sense of
urgency.
To get a fresh start, you may need to move. Move where the
jobs are.
Starting a business? Move where capital is plentiful and
free flowing.
The operative word: Move.
GRIMM FOSTERING THE PEOPLE
Opening quote: “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen, nobody knows my sorrow.”
One of my favorite characters in the show was none other than Teresa “Trubel” Rubel played by Jacqueline Toboni.
She was a runaway that would be taken in by Nick. She is also a Grimm. The show got a whole lot more interesting and fun when she came along.
“Nobody Knows the Trubel I’ve Seen” is the 19th episode of season 3. It aired on April 25, 2014. This is Trubel’s first appearance on the show.
Throughout her time on the show, money was a constant stressor of hers.
For instance, she did some of the following:
Stole a pair of boots
Stayed in cheap motels
Asked for money for food
Did not want to take handouts
In another episode, she helped stop an illegal teen
shoplifting ring. She herself was basically living in foster homes and on the
streets until she met Nick. One of my favorite scenes was when she stole that
pair of boots. It was very slick.
Well, we have come to the end of this post. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did writing it. There was nothing like this show.
I am a huge fan of the show Grimm. I miss it.
I still watch the show on demand. If this post piqued your interest in the show, check it out.
Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you. – Oprah Winfrey
I fully agree with that statement. I learned from Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin, to do what excites me. So, every post I write is a topic that I am excited about.
I write what’s brewing around in my head, what is burning in my soul, and straight from my heart.
Sometimes, I think of that scene in Spider-man Homecoming when Tony Stark (Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr. aka RDJ) meets Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland).
You can check out that scene here.
He says this to him:
Tony Stark: Why are you doing this, huh? What’s your MO? I’ve got to know, what gets you out of that twin bed every morning?
I ask myself that question. What gets me out of bed every morning and gets me going? If it doesn’t excite me, then I’m not going to do it. And that is exactly how I feel about writing for this blog.
This blog will be very lively and spirited. That’s me. Full of energy.
GET EXCITED
I don’t plan to bore you. I want to be the place you go to wake up to. Like a radio station. I want people to come here to learn new things, get inspired, and when they leave to feel good.
I also try to only do what excites me in my personal life as well. There’s no fear of missing out for me. If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen. If not, move one. There’s always another rainbow, opportunity, or chance for adventure somewhere. I say, onward and upwards.
Obviously, Oprah needs no introduction. You know the face and you know the name.
She has won multiple Daytime Emmy’s, been nominated for an Oscar, and is regularly asked to attend and speak at major events all over the world.
Well, Oprah once did the commencement address at Wellesley in 1997. In her address, she discusses 5 important lessons she has learned for a better life.
Here are the 5 quotes from Ms. Oprah Winfrey that have inspired me and I hope they do the same for you.
OPRAH ON LIFE
My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style. – Maya Angelou
Life is a journey. Every day experiences will teach you who you really are.
I remember reading a book and a man commented that he witnessed someone being mistreated. When he asked the man why he didn’t say mean things back to those who were saying awful things to him, he responded, “You cannot fight hate with anger. You can only show peoplewho you are by how you live your life.”
Indeed.
See my post on how to thrive by working harder than others that I learned from Jay Leno
When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. – Maya Angelou
2. When people show you who they are, believe them the first time. This is especially helpful with men. Don’t force them to beat you over the head with the message.
I have definitely learned this lesson.
In this life, if you want to not only survive and thrive, then you must learn to weed out the good from the bad apples quick!
Check out my post on what can happen to people that learn to value things more than people.
Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. – Marcel Proust
4. Be grateful. Keep a daily journal of the things you are grateful for. It will keep you focused on the abundance in your life.
It most certainly helps to think about all you do have, instead of what you don’t.
OPRAH ON HAVING VISION
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. – Melody Beattie
5. Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life because you become what you believe.
We have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible. – Beyonce
I remember reading that Bella Thorne creates a vision board for herself every year. Say what you want about her, but she is a hard working woman. You know why? It’s because she has a vision.
Arnold Schwarzenegger does something similar. Read all about it below. Very motivational.
If you want something in this life, you better be prepared to work for it. Nothing is free. Rarely is anyone ever handed anything in life. And even if you are, do you know what to do with it? Or how to manage it? It’s a lot harder to stay on top, when you haven’t done any of the work it takes to get there in the first place.
It wasn’t until I decided that I would be rich, that I started earning and attracting more money.
I learned that it all starts with the mind. Change your thoughts, change your life.
Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength. – Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the biggest movies stars in the world. His iconic roles in The Terminator, Predator, Total Recall, and True Lies are just some of his hit Hollywood blockbuster movies. During the 80’s and 90’s he raked in big bucks at the box office and cashed in big paychecks at the bank as a result.
In my quest to study the self-made, I decided to read up on the “Governator” himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Arnold wrote his autobiography, written in 2012, entitled, “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.” Clocking in at 656 pages long, it is a massive read. I actually completed this undertaking last December 2017. It took me 3 weeks to finish reading from cover to cover. In the book, Mr. Schwarzenegger actually lists his paychecks for his hit films. At one point, he was making $20 million per film.
How did he do it? There is only one word to describe it: unbelievably.
Here is his story.
ALL GREAT STORIES HAVE GREAT BEGINNINGS
The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 percent. – Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947, in Thal, Styria, Austria. His father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, served in World War II. Arnold’s mother, Aurelia, was working at a local shop when she spotted his father in uniform. That was all it took for her to fall for him as she loved a man in uniform. I must admit, so did I.
His parents married on October 20, 1945. His mother was 15 years younger than his father as she was 23. They were strict disciplinarians. Arnold said in Austria the rod was not spared if a child was disobedient. In the book, he said his father would make him and his brother earn their breakfast by doing pushups or sit-ups. His father believed that the way to fix any problem was through discipline.
YOUNG EXUBERANCE
Arnold was an average student but, was popular and well-liked for his boundless energy, humor, and cheerfulness. He started playing sports and picked up his first barbell at age 14. He decided that bodybuilding would be his career. His deep interest in the sport took up almost all his spare time. At one point, he even broke into the local gym when it was closed and began to lift weights for a couple hours just to get in his workout.
Money was tight growing up. There was no inside plumbing or bathroom. They fetched water to bathe from a local well and one of the highlights of his youth was getting a refrigerator, where he said they would marvel at the opening and closing of the fridge door. When going shopping his mother only used cash and never bought anything other than the essentials.
Austrians believed in conformity and were not allowed to be individuals. However, Arnold had different plans. He was considered a rebel because he wanted to move to America and be rich. He stated he wanted to be somebody. Due to his rebellious tendencies and other issues, Arnold was never close to his father as his favorite was Arnold’s brother. However, he had a close relationship with his mother until her death.
A chance meeting at his bodybuilding coaches house would change his life. Arnold, in 1966, met bodybuilder and movie star Reg Park, his idol, and he went on to become his mentor. Schwarzenegger decided he would not only be a body builder, but also a movie star, just like Reg Park.
BARBELLS AND COMPETITIONS
Training gives us an outlet for suppressed energies created by stress and thus tones the spirit just as exercise conditions the body. – Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold would work out almost every day. Lifting weights became an obsession. He would break into the gym on weekends when it was closed and work out.
He couldn’t stand to miss a workout. Arnold has said he couldn’t even look himself in the mirror, if he missed a workout. That is dedication. This was 1961. By 1965, all Austrian males, at the age of 18, are required to fulfill one year of military service, but Arnold had other plans.
AWOL BODYBUILDER
While in basic training, Arnold learned he was able to eat meat every day. Growing up, his mother had a garden where she would grow vegetables so she could feed her family on a tight budget. They rarely ate meat. Once he was able to get protein on the daily, he was constantly growing out of his uniforms. He went up a size every month and required a new uniform several times.
During his service, he learned basic tank mechanics, almost wreaked one by not putting it in park, and learned to ride a motorcycle. He said those skills would later serve him well while doing the Terminator and other films. Arnold learned to become pretty fearless. He was scared, but he would push ahead anyway.
During his time in the military, a Junior Mr. Europe Contest came up. He went AWOL and served a week in military prison because he chose to attend. But Arnold won that title.
He later received a job offer to work and train in a gym as a bodybuilder. He used this information and his past transgressions to convince the military to release him and he received an honorable discharge. That competition in Europe made him famous and the Mr. Universe title was his ticket to America-the land of opportunity, where he felt he could become rich.
CALIFORNIA BOUND AND HOLLYWOOD DREAMS
Arnold was happy to leave Austria as he had been telling people for many years as a kid he was going to America, but no one believed in his dreams. But the day came in October of 1968, when he was headed to California to train at the infamous Gold’s Gym in Venice, Los Angeles. He could barely speak English, but at the age of 21, was going to America to live and work.
— ⛓ Old School Gold ⛓ (@OldSchoolGold) May 30, 2014
Arnold was able to get a role in a film in 1969, “”Hercules in New York”, which paid him $12,000. He continued to train from 1970-1974 non-stop. In 1970, he won his first of seven, Mr. Olympia titles.
EDUCATION IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL FITNESS
In the 1970s, Arnold is enrolled in college throughout the decade. He bounced around to several taking math, English, science, and eventually earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1979. It took about 10 years, but finally he had his college degree.
He also stated in the book he would write down his goals on an index card at the start of every new year.
At one time in his life, he met Pope John Paul II in 1983, they talked about workouts. The pope rose daily at 5 a.m. in order to stick to his regimen. It was something like 300 push-ups. If he could do it, this book says, you can do it, too. This is where I got the idea to start my daily fitness routine. I, personally, like boxing.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO HOLLYWOOD
All roads not only lead to Rome, but in Arnold’s case also to Hollywood, California.
OLYMPIC CHAMPION
Arnold also competed in the Olympics and won the title of Mr. Olympia 3 times. After the 1971-74 competitions, in 1975, filmmakers convinced him to do the bodybuilding film Pumping Iron.
The worst thing I can be is the same as everybody else. I hate that. – Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold is big into frugality. He saved every dime he could from any winnings he made while competing. When he first got to America, he had $27,000. That is the equivalent of $173,000 (adjusted for inflation) in 2017. His motto was turn every dollar into two.
Arnold invested his money in real estate. He researched for 3 years and worked with an agent before finally setting his sights on putting a down payment on his four-unit apartment building at the cost of $214,000. Then he sold the building the next year for $360,000. Then immediately put his profits into a new 12 unit building. He did this to avoid the huge tax bills of his profits.
The Los Angeles real estate market was booming. You could make $100k profit in just a year or two.
Arnold then bought a 36 unit building, followed by a 100 unit building. Within about 10 years, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a real estate tycoon and millionaire.
This was close to 7-8 years before he would become a bankable Hollywood action star. He was able to be pickier and choose plum movie roles because he did not have to take any role that came his way. He always believed in going to the top. Go where its empty and you can chart your own path. He aimed to be the leading man.
CONAN
“The idea is not to live forever, it is to create something that will.” ― Andy Warhol.
After small roles in various film and television, he was offered the lead in his breakthrough film role of Conan the Barbarian in 1982. The movie was a hit.
Love the painted look.
Then he starred in the sequel, Conan the Destroyer, in 1984.
For me life is continuously being hungry. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer. – Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold got to meet and work with lots of people. He feels that building relationships is key to having a successful, happy, and fulfilled life. Some of those people include, Linda Hamilton, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Vanessa Williams, and the late Andy Warhol.
THE TERMINATOR
I’ll be back. – Arnold’s famous line as The Terminator
Arnold was offered a role in a film where there is a futuristic war between man and machines. At the meeting, with Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) and James Cameron (Avatar), he was convinced that the role of the T1 was pivotal, if the film was to be a success.
He was right. Listen to Ah-nuld! I just watched the film a few weeks ago. It still holds up.
Here’s one of my favorite scenes from the film; it’s Kyle Reese, played by actor Michael Biehn. He did an incredible job as he also did in the film Aliens.
Arnold Money Lesson: When Arnold met his future wife, Maria Shriver, he accidentally left his wallet at home. She had to write him a check for $70, to pay his train ticket home. He paid her back and wrote her a thank you note. In addition, he learned a valuable lesson. Always have cash. From that moment on, he would carry $1000 cash and a high or no limit credit card. He learned the motto of this blog, that cash is king.
He then decided to do a film by new first time director, Jim Cameron, called The Terminator. It went on to gross $80 million and Arnold was officially a bonafide movie star.
Fun Fact: Arnold likes to tell jokes. He decided early on that his films should include quips that are memorable one-liners and catchphrases. Like this, “Hasta la vista, baby” — Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
I actually heard that same phrase in a Jody Whatley song Looking For A New Love from her self-titled 1987 album. That was 4 years before T2.
HOLLYWOOD MAKING IT RAIN DOWN ON ARNOLD
“Money doesn’t make you happy. I now have $50 million, but I was just as happy when I had $48 million.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger
From there it just keeps getting better. He’s a hit factory and the paychecks got bigger and bigger. Arnold made $250,000 for Conan and $360,000 for Conan 2. Then took a pay cut for The Terminator, at $75,000. Arnold earned $1.5 million for 1985’s Commando, $3 million for 1987’s Predator and $8 million for 1988’s Red Heat. Bang, bang, bang! That’s all money in the bank.
He hit the deca-million ($10 million USD) paycheck mark with Total Recall in 1990. Then made $15 million for Terminator 2 and True Lies. Arnold eventually hit a $20 million-dollar payday in 1996 with Eraser. Yes, that’s US Dollars!

He is estimated to have a net worth around $400 million dollars.
And there you have it.
At the end of the book, he also listed Arnold’s Rules for Success.
Here is Arnold talking Life’s 6 Rules during the Governor’s 2009 USC Commencement Address. He said be unique, be a maverick. Maybe even an outlier?
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!
Mannequin was a film released in 1987 starring Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall. The story was about finding love and doing your passion. It was a feel good romantic-comedy (rom-com), that is memorable for its theme song Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.

PASSION TRUMPS ALL
Find your passion and get paid for it
The main character in the movie, aptly named Jonathan Switcher, as he was constantly switching jobs in the film. Kind of reminds me of John Ritter as Jack Tripper in Three’s Company, as his character was always tripping or falling. Ritter’s character also did lots of pratfalls (falling down) like Chevy Chase would do on Saturday Night Live for laughs as a sight gag dating back to the days of vaudeville.
Anywho, in the film Jonathan was really an artist at heart, but he just couldn’t find the right gig. Finally, as luck would have it, being nice and kind, is what got him his start.
He was walking when a little old lady (Estelle Getty, Sophia from Golden Girls) came into the path of a huge store sign that was falling. He pushed her out of the way and saved her life! She just so happened to be the owner of a major women’s department store and offered him a job on the spot.
This changes the course of his life.
Once she learns what he can do, she gives him a job as a window dresser. This is where his artistry skills come into play. He finally found a way to make a living doing something he loved and was good at. And people were willing to offer him good money. A competitor wanted to offer him big bucks for his skill by doubling his salary. He said he didn’t do it just for the money.
Turn your passion into your career.
He kept his job where he was. This is where the movie truly begins.
Your Fired! Pick up your paycheck and get out of here.
COMPASSION
Compassion for others
Before getting his job as a window dresser, Jonathan had lost his job, his girlfriend (Roxy, played by Carole Davis), had no money, and was just sad and alone. All that changes when he starts dressing a Mannequin who comes to life!
Her name is Emmy. She says she saw him last night in the rain. He looked so sad and lonely. So, she came back to life just for him.
Emmy Comes Alive
DANCE
Dance
It’s good exercise and fun. Singing also can help cure loneliness, sickness, and unhappiness.
So, like I once heard Toni Braxton say to her sistsers on Braxton Family Values, “Don’t be the fun police. Don’t be the fun po-po.” When you go out, have some fun. Don’t be a wallflower. Go out there on the dance floor and dance.
Good health is vital on the road to wealth. You don’t have to lift a ton of weights, but you do need to get moving.
So, sing and dance, will ya.
The absolute most fun and funniest scene in the movie was the dance scene. That is what dancing does, it brings you to life and in this film that means literally.

NO STEALING
Don’t steal
The men in the film are competitors to Switcher’s company. Once they find out about Emmy and her helping him make a name for himself as an in-demand window dresser, all hell breaks loose. They steal Emmy and then get arrested for it.
Do not steal. That’s all I have to say.
BE NICE
Be nice
Jonathan was a nice guy, but he was nobody’s fool. His kindness to others was always reciprocated back to him. He was nice. Then he got a job offer. He was nice. Easily, he made a friend. He was nice. And found his true love.
Good things can happen when you are nice. Being nice attracts things to you. In this film, it was a job.
Real love is something worth waiting and fighting for
My favorite and best scene of the film was the ending where they get married while the song Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship is playing. This is the most memorable part of the movie. It was a good way to end the film. It was a great scene and it made you feel good. Jonathan had finally found true love with Emmy.
When she came on the scene she informed him that she wanted to escape a loveless marriage from 4000 years ago B.C. She waited to come back to life to find the right man. And she commented to him in the film that she was so glad she picked him. And they only had eyes for each other.
Window Wedding Scene
This life is unpredictable. There are only a few things that are worth fighting for. Love is definitely top of that list.
I remember this movie fondly. It still has a special place in my heart.
This movie is what inspired me to help little old ladies. I had to help a complete stranger get out of a chair at a hotel one time. It just so happened that she was alone and I saw her struggling to get up. I walked over and asked if he needed help getting up. She looked up at me in surprise and said yes.
It sure felt good to help someone in need.
I do it every chance I get. Helping people across the street. Answering questions. I try to tip pretty well.
You know, I just try to treat people the way I would like to be treated.
I am nobody’s doormat, but I try to help the little guys out.
So recap…
Find your passion and get paid for it
Have compassion for others

Don’t steal. Earn your keep. Work for what you want.
I know. Easier said than done. You have a better chance of catching a fly ball at Yankee Stadium, than getting an entry-level position with a $70k starting salary.
However, bear with me.
I did some research and after a little digging found jobs (or companies) that pay a minimum of $70,000 a year.
Why is this post about $70,000 you ask? Great question. I will answer that here.
CEO PAYS ALL EMPLOYEES MINIMUM $70,000 SALARY
If you remember, just a few years ago, there was a CEO that read people are happiest when they make about $75,000 a year.
Well, he took that theory and ran with it.
He cut his own $1.1-million-dollar salary and gave every employee a minimum $70,000.
For some employees, this doubled their salary.
He made international headlines. This happened around 2015.
A follow-up article on the company showed that it did indeed help his employees and the company has grown. It doubled their amount of clients.
It seems doing good things, sticking to your convictions and principles attracts people and money to you.
Therefore, this article is about finding that happy sweet spot.
That my friends, is at about $70k.
WHAT TYPES OF JOBS ARE PAYING $70,000?
I did a search on online including indeed and other job sites. I just searched for jobs that pay $70,000+ salaries.
